UJ sizing grrr.

Well, ripped it all out after Hauser bailed me out with a big-small conversion UJ. Guess what ? It don't fit...

2 possibilities as I see it - wrong part or non-standard Prop.

Pic one shows the dimensions - you can see that the new one is just a gnats larger in every dimension.
Second pic shows back of my propshaft.

Can one of you trans gurus tell me at a glance if that is standard mopar propshaft on my car ?

should help you find out what you have, big Dodge, small Dodge or something else

big Dodge 7290 series
cap diameter 1.125"
prop/yoke inside flats 2 5/8"

small Dodge 7260 series
cap diameter 1.078"
prop/yoke inside flats 2 1/8"

on your old UJ should all measure like small Dodge

your new one should be a combination of the 2, if i understand correctly that's what you are trying to do

on UJ's measure across the outside edges of the locating ring slots, this should marry up with the inside flats of the prop/yoke, end to end isn't too important but will obviously follow suit

on your pic above of the new combination UJ (left), it looks like you've measured across the locating ring slots of the small Dodge side (yellow line), but the cap diameter of the big Dodge side (green line), could be confusing yourself there

Yeah, will re-measure.
I think the question is 'which is wrong'. New UJ is a tiny bit wider in all dimensions than current - it wont fit that prop. I need to establish whether the part is oversized or the prop undersized. Or give up and get a big prop of course...

you sure its wrong

new joint comes with the rollers in the caps nicely greased and there isn't any play. Hydraulic pressure and the rubbery seals hold the caps out a good few thou and your hands are not strong enough to press them in.

get it in a vice with copper or ally shields on the jaws and gently press the caps

then measure from the outside of the circlips and check the distance is the same or slightly smaller than the spread of the end of your prop shaft eyes

they don't fit easily and the rubber seals hold the caps out as well

I ended up using a slection of sockets and a big G clamp to get my new one onto my prop.

mine is small dodge or Aussie mopar (same but not)

the caps differ between the two and so does the length of the cross shafts
but the vital dimensions are the same

flat ends of the caps are recessed, in the eye of the prop with the old aussie one and slightly sticking out with the small dodge
just a slightly taller cap with a smidge longer rollers. it will be a metric/imperial thing I'd

when you mount it up onto the yoke make sure the back of the C clips is pushing into the yoke on the pinion. that helps draw the cap inwards and avoids a situation where you fire the clips off under the nearest hedge/freezer/pile of stuff that should have gone to the tip years ago.

it centres it up properly in a safe manner. with no clips the joint falls apart

Morgan I'm guessing as you had an original 318 in the motor that's prob the small prop could be wrong I'm sure will tell the difference ...

dave999 - Yep, with a bit of pressure I can get the caps to the distance apart - so yes, there was a bit of compression.
Cant get away from the cap sizes though - they are physically bigger than the old one. Micrometered the hole, the old cap and the new cap. New ones are bigger - not a hope they will press in.
Will post up later.

2 options at the moment look to be -
a) different prop.
b) swap the caps over - don't know if they can be re-fitted...

Right now I am off to mop the garage floor. Guess what happens when you pull the prop out ...?

have you tried swapping the new caps for the old ones? it's a bit fiddly and don't drop the pins ! you might find the internal of the cap will fit the new UJ bit
