Power Steering Pump and hoses - Small block 318

Post by polosteve »

Hi all,

I have a very tired power assisted (ram) steering system I took off my old van, it needs new everything! I am attempting to recommission it all and refit to my new van.

Anybody reccomend a company to make up the hoses with the correcting fittings?
Are the fittings on the back of a small block PS pump 1/2 inch?

Next.... A simple problem:

I have offered the pump up to the A100 van and I am unsure on what to do with the PS pump belt.

My old van had the belt running from the PS pump down to the main crank pulley - Simples.

On my new van this cannot happen because there is a redundant second V in the waterpump pulley, there is nothing in the extra V but it is in the way for the PS belt if I want to run it like last time down to the crank.

Can get a photo later if that would help.

What would you,do?

1. Buy a single V waterpump pulley?
2. Run a big belt around the crank, waterpump and PS pump (is this advised?)
3. Run the PS pump off just the waterpump second V, it's ready to go.... (Is this advised? - I don't like the sound of this one as much, Extra strain on the waterpump?)
4. Something else.......

Any thoughts appreciated,

Cheers,

Steve

you can buy rebuild kits for power steering pumps and the hoses, but you might find it just easier to bug a recon unit from the states

as for the pulleys my PS runs off the crank on my Dart, the alt, crank and water pump run together.

so with your spacing issue you could use spacers on the PS pump mounts to move it in line with the spare crank groove. are you sure the PS pump is in the right place?

I'm guessing the single V pump pulley would be the least hassle.
Somebody put an incorrect alternator on my Charger, and i'll need a new pulley sometime soon. However, in the meantime i've just packed it out with washers and spacers to get it to sit straight and inline. If you're doing this though, make sure you have plenty of thread/bolt to allow you to pack it out.
I'd try and avoid putting load on the water pump alone.

Also, the profile of an American "V" Belt is different to a UK style one and this can also cause issues as the UK version sits too low in the Pulley.
