Trying to get to the ignition switch to replace it on my 73 Dodge Challenger and it looks like I'm going to need a steering wheel puller , does anyone know if it's one specific to my car that I need to order or would one of the universal ones that are on Ebay work ? Thanks
It was cheap enough and got the job done, but it left quite a mark on the column thread. Should work with the challenger, when i pulled mine, it was the original wheel.
You DO need a puller, it is very easy to damage the column top bearing and housing. You could probably make one just as easy - 2 bolts that screw into the wheel and another that bears on the mainshaft and off you go.
I use a simple Grant 5891 puller, cheap and works well. Always use a puller on a Mopar column, you might get away with the brute force method on others but you will damage a Mopar column, they are designed to collapse very easily.
Thanks a lot for the replies, I see that Grant one is on Ebay but they are all in the US, anyone know of a place over here that would have one ? Thanks
Did my grant wheel yesterday. Went to local car shop and bought a cheap adjustable 3 leg pulled. To get some purchase, is large round washers under the 3 bolts that screw into the boss. Off she pops. Bit of a faff but miles off.
Now for th fun of removing the steering lock from the column
Thanks for the replies , so we've got that off but having trouble getting the steering wheel lock mechanism off , the switch is behind this , it won't budge when you pull it , is there a tip to getting it off ? Thanks
