Tinkling exhaust manifold

Post by octanejunkie »

My exhaust is making a noise like somebody has chucked a 10p piece into the exhaust manifold.
When i had a check over last october the mechanic said it was caused by some kind of emissions related valve or something. He said he'd sorted it, and at the time it went away. However, after the run today, the tinkling is back. What is in the manifolds of a 73 Charger 318 that would cause that??

If it does it under load it would suggest the timing is too advanced, it sounds like you are describing "Pinking" (pre-ignition) Bad for pistons and bottom end!

Leaking exhaust gasket will give you a metalic tapping noise. Very common if you have crappy hedman headers which are a tw@t to seal

That was my thought too. Removed one from my Monte Carlo when we made the exhaust,a vacuum operated flap that is on the bottom of one of the manifolds.

Flap in the exhaust manifold for warm up. I have headers now so no flap.

One of my manifolds has a flappy type thing that was making the sound you describe. It was loose and bouncing around so I fixed it in place. :working:

Had a look underneath, and wedged it open, but i still get a bit of a rattle on the over run. Anyone taken theirs out? Can it be done without removing the manifold?

The one on my Monte was separate to the manifold, bolted on between the downpipe and manifold, I took the flap out but needed to reuse the body as it is was part of the exhaust,it would have been possible to make a piece but it was just easier.

I had an AMC that had the same set up too so I guess yours is similar.
