68 Double D spray job

Post by Demon James »

The middle of race season may not have been the best time to start body repairs and a respray but it was well worth it.

The Dart is a very solid car but a couple of areas of rust needed sorting and I also fancied a new colour. So, I thought, Iv'e got the gear for spraying gates we make, I'll have a go :read2: :thumbright:

Cutting out the rust and filler was no bother, neither was welding in new metal and as it's not a show car I felt brave enough to give the whole thing a go.

The tired paint had various shades, not helped by various fluids that seem to have been spilled onto the trunk lid maybe in the past. Although I had become attached to the "ghost" head gasket on the roof, must have been from some previous orange over spray

It's by no means perfect. My novice ability and the fact its going to get knocked about and pushed etc was the deciding factor in not paying to have a concourse standard job. I well happy with the results and I wont be fretting about hand prints and little dings from tools at the track.

I even managed to get back into the mid twelves on our first outing since the respray. Maybe I was helped by all the black bugs flapping me down the track  MAN they like yellow dont they?

Still have a couple of minor paint runs to flat out but it's getting there.

Big thanks to the kids for helping with the prep work after school, many evenings spent sanding and clearing up because we still needed a fully functioning workshop each day, work has an annoying habit of getting in the way of a good time

Now I need to concentrate on the overheating motor, carb tuning etc and see if we can get a low 12 ;)

If you can be bothered, a 1200 grit wet flat will have that looking like glass...

Cheers, Gavin. Been a slog in the recent heat but better than trying to paint in the cold damp of winter :)

Wend doesn't miss an opportunity, there's already a small company sticker on each front wing

:-k Hmmm, company sponsorship has crossed my mind, Pete ;)

I would like to put a 68 Trunk Stripe on it to cut the yellow on the back end.

The company I use for the vans want it in their workshop for two days
so I am having a rethink.

I dont have time to trailer the car with all the loading and unloading twice.

I was thinking this stripe in flat black
