Involuntary Horn Use

Post by Dave81 »

Just recently i've noticed i seem to have an issue when turning the steering wheel. Basically it sounds the horn (just a pap).

By my reconing its happening at around the same point as the indicator cancel cam location. Does it in both directions.

Last year i changed out the indicator wiring and indicator block (new unit from year one), so thats a new indicator block all the way down to the connector at the base of the steering column. So shoudl be no issue here.

I'm guessing i have an earth issue somewhere and its completing the circuit and sounding the horn??

Anyone had a similar issue before?

Drove to work this morning for the pre NATS shakedown, and when turning the car around it happened twice (360 degrees apart) when pulling in at 3/4 lock.

Disconneted the horn for now as its embarrasing at islands near women in summer clothes....... :D :help:

mine did that

previous owner had the horn push centre button thing under the pad bolted down through the wrong set of holes. because he had the pad fitted in the wrong position to compenstate for the fact that the wheel was not in the right place,,,

1 set let the screw heads earth the base of the thing to the metal wheel
1 set let the screw heads earth the top half because they don't fit through the holes to clamp on the inside of the base, and that contact with the top half completes the circuit
and indeed doing them up tight compresses the switch which also completes the circuit

so to compensate he'd done them up loose!!!!!???? sPanNnNNNnA

anyway took it off
turned it 30 degrees and bolted it down again with the screws through the big 'oles in the top half which let the screw head pass through which were pretty bloody obviously the ones you should use

mine look like this

job done

yours sounds like a chaffed wire or the tiny thumbwheel that runs in the track on the bottom of the collapsible bean tin isn't actually running in the track.....

my problem was random over bumpy road

yours isn't

My Truk used to been when it went over bumps. I had a few attempts to fix it, then gave up and fitted a button on the dash :thumbright:

Thanks Chaps.

Bloody typical so close to the NATS.

Will disassemble/remove the horn push button and see if that's the culprit.

If its still doing it then it must be within the column......mmmmmm.

Thanks for the help....Will report findings.

Mine tended to parp randomly (bit like me). I put up with it until it went off continuously in a traffic jam, and the driver in front threatened to lamp me

I think I swapped the B&Q screws securing the contact plate for some countersunk grub screws, which gave a bit more clearance. But they may have worked loose, because she's started parping at every pothole again.
