Engine dress-up : braided hoses

Hi all,
Cracking day at Santa Pod yesterday and jaw-dropping collection of car-porn !!!
Justin (Dart Vader) gave me a "walk through" on how the drag strip works being my first visit and it was great to see so many 60's and 70's Mopars strutting their stuff (rather quick mind) on the blacktop !!!
At the show n shine it dawned on me that my engine compartment needs some attention - braided hose work.
So, you can either get full silicone hose with a braided outside, or you can get a braided "cover" in varying diameters to cover your existing rubber pipe work.
What say ye ? Any pro's, any cons, anything to avoid ?
I'd guess all that silver must at least reflect some heat ?? Does it.

Hi Garp,
Your car looked great btw in Sublime with the blacked out front grille.

In terms of what to avoid, I'd say avoid braided hoses.

much more suited to Ch**ys and Fo**s.

Cheers mate- the full blackout just gives a tad more aggression reminiscent the earlier models and although a simple hack, is very effective and gets rid of the "frown" line.
..... braided hoses may be a no, but some folk made it look bloody good - just two water hoses and the big rad one ..... not going to do the whole nine-yards !
you know how it is .... there's always something to do even when there isn't !

next time engine is out paint the engine bay body colour
and put it back in

a braided hose can have benefits in respect to hose expansion i.e maintain pressure better, (brakes fuel etc)

a braided hose can have more robust connectors, removes in many cases the dependency on hose clamps

a braided hose can go some way to assist with heat management. shiny braid deflects heat

a braided hose can help avoid chafing where cloth braid or naked rubber doesn't (with the latter 2 you can se evidence as soon as it starts)

a braided hose will suck more heat out of a hot liquid due to its bigger bulk and the fact hat the braid is a good conductor. it would also supply more heat to a cold liquid for the same reasons, i.e has an adverse impact on a nitrous oxide installation more gas to purge before liquid reaches solenoids.

some of the really fancy race stuff is quick connect/disconnect which is nice if you rebuild your motor and trans regularly or are in charge of a 747 or a space shuttle

they cost a lot and look very nice.

you will see "aircraft quality" mentioned in the advertising!....what does that mean. its good enough to last between the regular and rigorous inspection and maintenance regime applied to an aircraft? or it has a lifetime of x 1000 hours of run time at a specific temperature and pressure, that isn't easily measured in a car? is that a good thing? I want it to last 100,000 miles without it going pop and the minimum of attention from me .

many of the things above can be addressed using a combo of high pressure rubber hose and hard line. (swage the ends, use smooth hose clamps not toothy jubilee clips) and a bunch of parts from a well stocked plumbers merchant. on everything other than say a top end race car


personally i'd spend my money on other stuff

good quality rubber for fuel injected cars that is impervious to the effects of ethanol works just fine

having used silicone universal radiator hose before I can say it is robust. but it looks wrong on cars this old, even the black stuff, when filthy, is still too shiny .


Just my view. and possibly all kinds of wrong

Looks nice and tidy and yea braided stuff is nice, and expensive too, your engine looks fine,maybe get some sort of loom for the spark plug wires and call it a day and go drive it,looks like a fun car to drive over there :thumbright:


Here is the Cuda we have, just simple, tidy and clean

Dave999 nailed it.

A Mopar should be body coloured under Hood - that tends to lift things more than any Braided hose; Though clearly a lot more work!

Have a great time and just drive it.
