Steering coupler clip needed

Post by MilesnMiles »

I'm about to rebuild my steering coupler. I have a kit (thanks Rebel) to do this. However the smal clip that retains the shoes within the coupler is missing.
It's the clip in the link below

If anyone has one knocking about I could really use it. Apparently they are not available to buy individually

Ade, in the link I posted there is a metal spring type piece. That's what's missing.

Mikes I've pulled the one I have apart and that clip isn' t there. All thats inside is the two paddles, two thin shims and the connecting pin.

Ok Ade, thanks for checking. I haven't pulled mine apart yet, as I wanted he clip. Was yours in good working order? I also as I thought the clip was essential in holding the two shim type pieces to centre the column.

It worked fine Miles.I swapped it out to convert to powersteering which required a shorter coupler.

Ok cool. I've not delved into mine, but the shoe type things much have shifted as the coupler can move around the steering column shaft.

There is alot of free movement in them Miles. The shape of the body casting itself prevents the shoes from falling off.

Just a question, will this rebuild kit remove or reduce the annoying side to side movement at the steering wheel.

No, I'd look at that pretty soon :)

Not sure what car you have, but the steering wheel/column should not move.
Look under the dash and you will see a number of bolts to secure the column. On some Mopar, mine included there are two bolts that pass thru square plastic washers. These can work loose sometimes. Check that they are tight and also that the main bracket that holds the column is tight.
All of that can be checked in. A few minutes by just looking up from under dash
Afte that, you have smal bearing in the headstock, a bushing on the engine compartment side of the steering column where the column shifter is and finally the steering coupler at the bottom of the column. Mine is loose there but that does not translate into any movement at the steering wheel end.

Check under the carpet at the bottom of the steering column as well, there's a plate there, held in with two bolts. It fits over the column, presumably to help keep it in place

Yep, don't want that wandering about!
Also, check that the actual steering box is bolted tightly to the K frame. They can loosen off.
