Homemade Tyre removal

So after a season of no grip (unless the track was glued) and being unable to find a tyre fitter that could cope, I decided to at least get the old lardy lumps off myself.

Bring forth the DIY bead breaker. I thought I've got nothing to lose as the tyres were made in 1988 which I've recently found out.

I was tempted to cut them off and trash them but this little device was a total success

Whipped the tubes out no problem then with my Wendy's help we also got the tyres off without any damage to us, tyres or rims

All made from scrap, even the 10 foot curved handle (possibly a little over engineered but I didn't have to make a mark 2) and no tape measures where harmed during the fabrication of this tool, this may show

yup. I have been told by a few people that it would be very hard to break the bead by hand so I had no idea how much leverage I’d need.

Turns out not much, mind you, the weight of the handle alone may have helped

It was a test bar we made when playing with the capabilities of our roller machine. It has no use whatsoever , until now glad I didn’t throw it out

My guys came into work this morning and asked what it was.

I said "It's a rubbish see-saw for someone with no friends"

If I can remove tyres safely, why not try and build the tools to mount them back on?

Bit of a long shot but it worked. Even down to the non scratch moulded pvc and steel fitting tool. Found an old bit of black down pipe, warmed it with a hot-air gun and moulded it round the end of the bar. No scratches, smooth action and one fitted tyre

My hand has been forced by lack of capable fitting stations in the area, even commercial set ups dont seem to have the machinery for 15" wide rims.

Still, their loss is my gain it would seem. I can now swap rear tyres at will in less than an hour with clearing up

Now, how about building a balance stand ( the old fashioned way) hmmmmmmm
