Aussie disc brakes

Post by paolo_mangusta »

I was talking to our local mechanic and he said he works on an Aussie Charger from time to time (Peterborough area - anyone know it?) We were talking about my brake dilemma and he said that the one he works on has four-pot fixed callipers. Can anyone help with answers to the following please (there's no prize ;) )?

Do they usually have discs on them?
Are they four pots?
And (most importantly) do they have anything in common with the Kelsey-Hayes set-up on the Yank A-bodies before '72?

Cheers

No, No and No. There are two main types of disc brake fitted and as far as I can remember they are both single pot. They were locally made in Australia so it is unlikely they are the same as the US types.

What Charger is this in Peterboro? The only one I knew of got banger raced. Sounds like he has some modified brakes on there.

Thanks James, it must either be modified or my source has it wrong (not entirely impossible!)

Oh well, I thought it was a long shot... back to the old drawing board :(

I'll ask a bit more about the Charger next time I'm up there.

It could be the blue one that James Norton owned, thats not far from Peterborough, owned by Ray Barnard , MGJ21L .
4 pots could be an after market fitment, anything will fit anything with enough enginuity and a big enouugh grinder.
there was an Aussie Charger with complete Granada front suspension a while back, and a red own in Norfolk with Jag IRS .

Actually, the name Ray rings a bell, that could be it. I was too busy concentrating on finding an answer to my brake conundrum to pay enough attention

They do normally have discs on them but they are more like what is fitted to Fords. In fact I used to ask for Mustang pads when I needed to replace mine.

Ah, but the callipers (and so pads, I assume) on my Dart are the same as as an early Mustang...

The plot thickens :?

Well that car is a VH (if it is the same) so it's possible then. The VJ had completely different pads. Definately neither is four pot though.

Ho hum, another ray of hope vanishes behind a cloud...

Anyone want to buy a Dart with no front wheels?

No engine in it either, so, no, though it does make the front end lighter :)

Going to try and get over to see Blue to get some old drum brake hubs he has so I can tow the thing. Except they're a Jag fitting.

At least that way I can get it to the crusher

Don't stop keeping on. I'm sure there must be a solution somewhere. Can you put a refresh post on the original problems you are having. Or start a new post. THERE MUST BE AN ANSWER!

Cheers Kev, I hope there is... I've bumped the original questions.

I'm only joking about crushing it...just. I'm too miserable about it tonight - spent hours on ebay, moparts, and loads of US suppliers and found nothing. I'll sleep on it, form a plan and post in a cheerier mood tomorrow...

When I bought it I thought a four-pot vented disc brake option was a GOOD thing...
