heads off

Post by Duster1 »

Have just removed the heads or should say just the passenger side,as at this moment i cannot get access to the drivers side external bolts due to exhaust header being in the way. Any suggestions much appreciated.
The pistons have carbon build up deposits on them, so what is the best way and what with to clean them, without removing. Also noticed that there is a small raised lip from about 1/4" down to the top of the bore, is this a good or bad thing. Although the bores still have visible honing marks on them ( i believe the engine had been worked on at some point). All lifters look in perfect condition, with no visible wearing on them or camshaft.
The head I've removed requires valve stem seals and general cleaning and removal of carbon deposits from valve heads and reseating .
There is slight play in the 1st intake valve removed, what is an acceptable amount of play, if any.
I suppose the biggest question is, as this is the first time I've done anything like, this am I up for the task.
I don't want to go mad on this, as i have a doner engine which has had some work done already, but that is a project later down the line and when funds are available.
The car has been sitting around for to long, just want to get back on the road.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Andy
