wiper park on my 72 new yorker
Hi the wipers on my new yorker used to park no problem now they stop where you switch them off, on a new yorker the wiper hide away when parked ie go alot further down out the way then when they are in use.
Ocassionally when they have stopped where ever really p-i-ssing me off they will suddenly park them selfs away
Any idea anybody how to fix it ? or what controls the motor ?
cheers andy

Re: wiper park on my 72 new yorker
sounds like electrical problem, I think one of the cables is the for taking it to end stop position after switch off.
check you connection to the wiper motor and if you have the manual for the car that may show the connection/cabling then check them.
When it does it sometime would suggest a bad connection.
Good luck.

Re: wiper park on my 72 new yorker
usually a cam on the underside of the big cog in the flat round area of the motor unit
that cam triggers a switch behind the big cog on each rotation
that switch is connected to a wire that goes back to the dash switch
the pin it is connected to is usually connected to either earth or power when the dash switch is moved back to off and is connected to absolutely nothing when the dash switch is in every other position
thus that circuit kicks in, powering the motor into park while the cam has the switch under the main drive cog in its switched on position
i.e that switch is switched every rotation but only carries current when the dash switch is off and the special pin is actually connected to something to allow park to work
no idea if yours is the same but that is the general principal of operation.
this feature often doesn't work if the motor is off the car because one end or the other of the park circuit needs to be earthed, ( use that to get a discount if buying a used motor
) and that is either via the switch housing to the metal dash or is in built into the earthing of the motor unit to the body. depend which way PARK is powered up. Chrysler did not take the easy option on aussie cars. i'd suggest that's probably the same on all
suggest re moving and bolting down again the dash switch.
easier than messing with the motor
then its cover off the motor mark the cogs and pull out the big one to see if the switch in the bottom of the housing has snapped or stuck in ancient grease.

hello dunc
yes i still have it
apologies not looked at it in ages
i gave up originally, surface mount, machine soldered components are hard work its a bit too new and all a bit too small, but, i have a new meter and you reminded me...maybe a clean fresh set of eyes will have more success....and i've got glasses now so i can see

Re: wiper park on my 72 new yorker
Tried what dave said about the dash switch but gave up as the switch is a total bitch to get at on a 72 c body
Obviously checked the bulkhead connectors which looked surprising good
So decided to remove wiper motor, I removed the clip to disconnect the wiper mech rather than the much easier nut as previous experience had taught me if I removed the nut instead the wipers would never be in the same position again
Removed motor and took to bits and found a switch like a set of points was discoloured so cleaned up and freed up the pivot mech
Put all back together and tested, before fitting to the car
Bingo works perfectly again
Well happy

Re: wiper park on my 72 new yorker
My Challenger always does this, stops where i turn them off, no self parking.
I might take a look at this too, although I think I may have the wrong switch / motor combination which I beleive can casue issues.
Might try the phone pics too!!

Re: wiper park on my 72 new yorker
nice one
all working...
the temptation to grease the nylon cogs overcomes some and it works its way to the switch and gums it up....
yours looks nice and clean so i guess its just humidity/ corrosion that got in the way.
if it had been the circuitry or the wires to the switch it can be nightmare
in some cases, i don't know about yours, the motor is like a 3 phase motor
3 sets of coils in the case and 1 magnetic spinny bit
when the wipers are on, all 3 coils power the motor forward
when you switch the wipers off 2 are powered forward, as normal but the power to the 3rd is swapped backwards to act as a brake, so the wipers go at 2/3 normal speed to rest
so the wipers slow to their rest point
the cam in the bottom of the motor switches that switch and leaves only the 1 phase powering the motor backwards. this single backwards phase is used to power a mechanical linkage to pull the wipers into their hidden below cowl hidey place by which point the motor has turned far enough to unswitch the cam switch in the bottom
as you can imagine you aint getting anywhere if you don't have a manual on that kind of set up. its the product or a very clever and twisted mind
lesson
take loads of photos of the wiring of your motor and switch before removing it always always do it. there are 1000s of ways to wire it all up and the chances of you hitting on the exact right way by accident (as i have found) is probably NIL

Re: wiper park on my 72 new yorker
ps if trying to nut this out with the lot off the car
the motor and the body of the wiper switch should be bolted to a bit of steel bar.
keep your hands away from the linkages, they will take off your thumbnail like a knife through butter
and the bar should be connected to the negative of the battery
you will not get any sense out of it unless the motor and the strip contact that earths to the dash around the switch mount share the negative/earth
