Which Holley Carb? - Small block 360

Post by polosteve »

Evening all,

Just 'pub chat' for now as I don't have the vehicle yet, it's in a crate. What Holley would you reccomend for a mild street 360? (That will initially be standard and tired...) With an intake, headers, cam etc.....

Probably no more than a 600 Vac Sec.
Maybe even smaller.

If you look at the CFM charts it points to a 550cfm unit....

A good mate of mine had a 500ci BB Dynoed.

With a 750 Holley and with an 850 Holley.

Amazingly it made more power with the 750.

Bigger is not always better.
Throttle response will be sharper with a smaller carb.

Honestly for your application I would seriously consider a Street Demon. Probably the easiest way to get a decent tune and good balance between power, economy and drivability

I want electric choke and vac secondaries,

Street Demon 625 has a nicer price tag.... A street Avenger is another $100 on top (570 or 670) would I even notice the difference between the two?

Is maintenance any easier on one?

Cheers for the swift responses,

A very good point Pete.
Forgot to mention mine has "cruiser" gearing , and would be interesting to see how it performs with a livelier set up out back :-k

Check the link and go to one of the carbs, in the overview there are tons of links to tests from magazines etc, brochure etc. It's like a modern thermoquad, brand new design. Look at the Holley recommendation but I'm sure the 750 would be equally OK

the aussies swear by what they call a holley 465 for torque and street manners. i.e "look how quickly i can tow my sizable boat full of bilge up the slip-way with my cool mopar truck" can't tell if Bananarama! up or not....

i don't think they are made anymore as a Holley 465..

believe this carb lives on in the US with a 500+ CFM name as a holley style clone by one of the race carb manufacturers

its not a bored out aftermarket 390 it was a proper holley model, i know they exist just never held one in my hand
