255/70/15s on an E body?

Hi All,

Has anyone had these on their Challenger / Cuda? Is the fit around the wheel arch ok? Do they bottom out over bumpy roads?

Looking for this sort of thing:

depends on offset/inset etc that tire will fit with these correct

I had to experiment loads to get the 29.5 x 10.5 x 15 Hoosiers under the Challenger without cutting the Tubs.

As Duncan says, the key is getting the right back-space combination for the wheels.

Check BOTH sides - you would be amazed ho much the body shells vary in accuracy.

Thanks for the information. I was thinking of using the tyres on my current Torq Thrusts, with a back spacing of 3.76"

What width are they ? 8.5"?

They're 15x7s. North Hants said 255/70/15s would fit that wheel, but said they weren't sure the tyre would fit in the Challenger wheel arch.

I've seen 70s fitted to a 70s Cuda once before, but that car had air shocks fitted.

Have you had to modify your suspension to get those Hoosiers to fit?

My set up is totally different.
Only the stock wheel tubs remain, everything else has been changed.

"E" Body axles are wide (wider than a "B" Body) so you may need wheels with big backspaces to work with tall and wide tyres to prevent them rubbing on the wheelhouses.

That's what North Hants tyres said, on the wheels I have the tyre would rub on the housing. Thanks for your help.

It was on my '69 Dart and 1.5" on my '69 Barracuda... measure, measure, measure....

As has been said these cars vary too much, you have to measure both sides of your own car. If you look, Northants give the dimensions of the tyre, the overall diameter, the tread width, and most importantly the section width, which is the distance across the sidewalls on a given rim width. The other factor is how high or low the car is, this makes a huge differance.

So I bought the 255/60/15s in the end, North Hants had a good Black Friday deal on. After some research the diameter on the 255/70/15s is to wide for most Challenger's inner housing at normal ride height and they only seem to work with air shocks or reshaping the leaf springs / adding another leaf.

Was going to get the arches rolled so they can fit and someone locally said they can do it but blue made some good comments below.

The lip area you are trying to roll is quite thick on these cars, I've never managed to roll the section successfully. You tend to end up breaking out the hammer and it might look ok from the outside but it's messy and you are defiantly creating a water trap. What I do these days is trim the lip back to about 1/2" wide, tack weld the 2 panel halves back together if you have gone beyond the spot welds and use panel sealer to fill any gaps to keep out the water. To the untrained eye it still looks factory.

So now going to cut back the inner lips with a grinder, wish me luck. It looks like there's surface filler in the arches for some reason, so it going to get messy.

Finally got this done. Here’s the wheel arch returns cut back and the 255/60/15s on 15x7s just about fit.
