318 upgrade ?

Post by TIB3300 »

IF? I was going to build a beefed up 318?

What could I do without a big budget?
Is the a tuning book I should buy? :read2: I know I can go for stroker, but what other alternatives to a budget build ?

Thanks In advance :thumbright:

Cam :-k
Headwork
pistons :-k

if it's stock now then more compression (kb167 pistons), cam, 4 barrel inlet/carb, headers/dual exhaust then heads. a 4" stroker kit to get you to 390 cu in wouldn't hurt either, lol. obviously the last one will need 'more' cam and a bigger carb too.

Depends how much more power you are after and what you call a big budget. Parts and machine work have got very expensive these days. Assuming you already have an aftermarket intake and 600cfm carb and exhaust headers, a cam kit and matching torque convertor is the best bang for the buck. That will probably still set you back the best part of 2 grand though…

Thanks Neil
I cant decide whether to build a 360 stroker or build the spare 318 I already have
Yes I would be going for a bigger carb on this build

Hello Blue
I was thinking £2 -£3k
No nothing at the moment apart from a spare 318, I am a patient man I don't mined searching the net to collate the bits/parts over a year or two.

Q;
What compression ratio would be safe with a standard cast crank. Or should I just buy a steel?

Unless you are looking to make north of 500hp I wouldn’t worry about cast cranks. Aim for around 10.1 compression maximum, and with the right cam and intake you’ll probably make over 300hp which would make a pretty powerful road car.

Thanks :thumbright:
Although I have been a car mechanic since the 80s, Ive never actually built an up'rated engine, apart from the odd cam and carb.. :read2:

If you just wanted to improve acceleration and was not too worried about at higher cruising speed, a set of Numerically Higher gears is probably the cheapest fix for livening up a car, as with all modifications and projects - it depends on the overall objective.

the 360 stroker would be a 408 so only 18 cu in more than the 318 stroker at 390 cu in. and you'd have to buy a 360 while you already have the 318.

7ltr would be 427/428 ish so 408 isn't near that at under 6.7ltr, lol. 40 over on the 318 with the 4" stroker gives 392 which is a vintage hemi size.
neil.
just remembered they do a 392 gen3 hemi in modern chargers/challengers too these days, playing on the vintage vibe.

this is probably a bad idea......

you will need to find the crank out of a 360 that someone has discarded because they went with a new steel stroker crank
you will need 360 heads that someone has discarded because they went for nice ally heads

you will need to deal with the internal external balance issue and turn down the mains

etc etc etc
