How do I tell what transmission I have in my Satellite. Do I need to find the type numbers or are there visual differences between the 904 and 727 transmission?

You can tell by the oil pan/sump. I dont have the link at hand but a quick google search will produce a pictorial view. Thats how i found out that my 904 was a 727!! Also, 727 is longer as i recall.

Look at the top two in this link (pdf file)

The 727 trans has a bulge in the side of the oil pan where the filler tube fits.

Latil is correct. But I am not sure if it is always there or if it is easily seen from under the car?

You can usually see the shape of the trans oil pan from above without even getting under the car.
