68 charger 440 exhaust

Post by Anonymous »

hi people, i am new to this site and it is excellent. i have just shipped a 68 R/T no. matching charger in amazingly rust free shape from texas and i am slowly preparing it for an mot.(the mechanicals were not that good!) whats the best exhaust system size to give the best performance from a 440 and give the best note/v8 sound without being too offensive to neighbours etc! i fancy a 3" system -is this too big?
the engine is standard apart from headers, but i want to fit an aftermarket intake manifold and mild street cam at a later date.
i was thinking of exiting the system downwards before the axle (the car is well sealed underneath) as it eliminates all the bends and hassle of going round the axle, shocks and tank? i had this set-up on a 69 firebird and it worked well.
what do you all think?, best set-up? which mufflers to use?
can anybody recomend a supplier in this country?
thanks
sean
p.s. do we as members of the M.M.A. get any discount of spares suppliers, if so which ones?

I have a 3" exhaust that turns down just in front of the axle, the only problem is cruising dusty showgrounds, pits etc I think I coated Petes barracuda with an inch of dust at the supernats
I have dynomax mufflers, but they are a bit on the loud side

what we need here is some
SOUND ADVICE :)

I recently installed a pair of Thrush silencers (thanks Duncan) on my 440 Charger and they are pretty good. Similar sound to cherry bombs but quieter.

My favorite sound has to be cherry bombs, got them on the Fury.

FURY recorded from drivers seat

and heres a 440 with cherrybombs ,

My Charger 440 has Hedman Headers with inch n three quarter primaries, 4 inch collectors and 3 inch pipes. It has Cherry Bombs in n all and IMHO it sounds the absolute dogs. Although I have to say people who live in the villages I drive through hate it.

If you want loud, angry V8 nastiness, its a good combo. If not, dont go near it. full chat and overrun sound fantastic.
