Are these to big.

Does anyone know if a 285x70x15 tyre,will fit a 68 charger.These measure 30.5 across & 11.5 wide.I saw them on Bobs 73 R/R which had the same wheels as mine.I know the 2nd gen charger had the biggest wheel well,but maybe the R/R has wheels set back more.Thanks in advance,Adam.

I think you would be pushing your luck. Unless the back end is jacked up 70s style they will probably either hit the inner wheelwell or catch that arch. Depending on wheel offset and width.

Your best bet is to borrow your mates wheels and try them.

295/50s fit with no mods, depending on backspacing
dont know how the larger diameter will affect it
best to do as Dave says and try them

Its the diameter on top of the width that makes me think they might be too tight.

If you use a wheel that is really too small for the width of the tyre you will have a better chance of them fitting. A 7 or 8 inch wide wheel will give you a chance but a tyre that wide should really be on a 10 inch wide rim and I think that will make it very tight.

got 275/60/15 on my 68 but cos of wrong backspace need air shocks to stop rubbing the arch as dave says when fully loaded, need 4.5 inch back space for 275's i read somewhere 5" for 295's is that right jon?

Trev if you are running air shocks, keep an regular check of the upper shock mountings as I have seen rust free cars running them that the upper mounts have bent/split badly.

Or more accurately, try it on both sides because the bearing adjustment means the hubs are always offset to a greater or lesser extent

As we're on this subject, I have a pair of 10x15 wolfies for the back of my charger and 7x15 for the front. I know the front's ok but the rear ones at present have N50/15 tyres fitted, they need replacing as they are wrecked due to standing. Whats the best size tyre to replace them with? I have tried them on both sides, they are 4.5 backspace and with the current tyres there's a 1 inch gap between the tyre wall and outer arch, thats unloaded and with (I assume) standard shocks, definately not air shocks.

They both look ok with the inner arch, I can get my hand round the back and there seems to be plenty of room there. I don't really want to road test them as they are due to the condition of the tyres. I thought Trev's backspace was causing the problem with it being 3.75 or is it 3.25

Actually James. Usually the axle itself is not centered. Sometimes the spring perches are the wrong distance apart too. They didn't care as long as the wheelbase was right. The sometimes didn't even get that right and you have to fit shims behind the front leaf spring mounts.

I think Trevs is OK for the most part. But with the wife, two kids and a load of camping gear it starts rubbing like hell. Even with new springs.
