I think Neutral is the only position that does not effect the level in any way?

Apparently, and I got this from Richard Alder at Alders Automatics. You are always supposed to check the level in N, but make sure you are level and have the handbrake applied!

This check should be made when the engine temperature gauge indicates a normal warmed-up condition and the transmission fluid is heated to its normal operating temperature. Check fluid level with parking brake applied firmly and the engine idling. After engine has idled for two minutes, move gearshift lever slowly through all gear positions, pausing momentarily in each and ending with lever in N position. When fluid is hot level should be at the full mark or slightly below, but NEVER ABOVE the full mark. Fluid should be added or extracted depending on the reading to restore specified level.

is P not identical to N apart from it sticks a peg in the output shaft via a mechanical arm?

I've always checked my autoboxes in park...
too damn dangerous to do it in first....even with the parking brake on, I'd be putting a couple of bricks in front of your wheels if you go down that route. I can only imagine how popular I would be if either the Charger or the Disco went careering down the hill into my neighbours beemer with me holding the dipstick in my hand looking stupid...

I have never seen a difference in the actual level between P and N to be honest.

Never check the level in gear. NEVER!

The only thing you check in gear is the idle mixture.

Apparently not. It has to be N for a true reading. Something about the flow of fluid around the box. But don't take my word for it, try it. I'd be curious to find out the results.

I was talking to Blue about the P or N debate. But I can't remember what he said! I know it has to be in N. Sorry for confusing the issue with my first post. Autoholic has the answer more or less.
