I would guess you can get damn close by nipping the adjuster up snug (not too tight and then backing off the number of turns the workshop manual tells you.

Adjusting the bands have no effect on third gear just first and second unless the band is not releasing third gear applies when front and rear clutches apply and the band is released

Probably has to be inch-pounds if it is anything like a torqueflite.

A badly adjusted kickdown band will stop it upshifting at all acording to the manual. But it does not say if that is too tight or too loose.

Which band were you messing with Starsk's?

we are taking it out now but cant get any torque it just screws right up
to the retaining nut! (got a right telling off on mustang site)
still probably deserved it. fed up now she is leaking oil which i have never had before as you know :!:
It broke down on thurs had that same high rev sound just wandering if i lost 3rd then :?
as that is why we looked at gear oil in first place and started fiddling ,not really given her much stress since ,she could have been in second the 8 miles i had to drive here, i was slow as not to cause any further problems :?:

quick update, seems to be 2nd lost not 3rd. Shifts smoothly from 1st to 3rd and back when you come to a stand still. When you kickdown she goes staight to 1st, also goes straight to first when you shift manually.

No you didn't Starsks ;)

Might pay to check the vacuum pipes that connect to the vacuum diaphram unit, if these fall off the box will not shift correctly.
