Restoring a Six Pack

This is the six pack from Brad Horns old Barracuda. Now owned by local lad Tim who should be joining us soon. If you recall Brad had an engine fire before the insurance company hassles he later had.

Tim was advised to replace this with a 4bbl carb but i think I can save it.

I have my work cut out for me though...

The heat must have been quite intense for a while there. The vacuum diaphram canisters have melted. Possibly started by a fuel leak. I found the fuel lines and fuel bowl adaptors were all loose. So that was a possible source of the leak. All the other screws etc were very tight due to the heat.

It is just as bad inside the carbs. Water has been poured down each carb and they have corroded inside.

This is not going to be easy. Wish me luck!

I would have thought they were beyond economical repair - you can still buy these new.

I have a Six Pack at home and keep putting off restoring it due to the amount of work involved although the unit is basically very sound....

Well i just took the centre carb apart and all the gaskets seem OK. Just a few minor cork gaskets need replacing.

The carbs were pretty new before the fire by the look of it. So all the gaskets are the "re-useable" type. Several things suggest to me this six pack was never tuned to the engine. It should be better than ever by the time I have finished with it.

I have a year one retail catalog from 04 so prices may be diffrent now?

1969-70 440 a/t and m/t models Centre carb $543 ea
Outboard carb $450 ea so your talking $1500 for the set

For the 71 440 a/t and m/t models its more! centre carb $717 ea!
and the Outboard carb $450 each so $1617 + shipping etc

They do rebuild kits Dave but recone for all what you would need about $250 plus shipping etc

I dont know if you are interested but I have a set of six pack carbs that I bought of Clivey for £300. I am not going to use them at the moment and by the time I get round to using them you probebly wont be able to buy petrol so if you want them all I want is what I paid for them.

A complete six pack set up is getting well over $1500 these days. Closer to $2000 in fact!
The air filter assembly alone (which seems to have disappeared) is about $350.

Complete re-build kits are about $65 for each carb. The rubber vacuum diaphrams are $31 each.

However I think I can restore this one for around £100. Not counting the hours I will have to spend doing it. I will not be charging much if anything for those hours. Tim may be able to do something for me in return as he owns a garage.
