Vibration-(rear)

Post by Scooby »

Hi i have a 72 318Ci Charger. This is a recent purchase so I am now trying to sort a vibration problem coming from the rear. According to the last owner the prop has been replaced and balanced. I have also had the rear wheels balanced as they hold wide alloys with a tyre size of P275/60/15 Goodyears. I have greased up the nipples on the prop (both ends) and checked the diff oil level which is ok. This car has done a lot of standing start -racing,could there be something I am missing. Any good advice-help is welcome.
Many thanks.
Richard. (username Zealey)

Welcome to the madhouse.

Is it a constant vibration or just at certain rpms or what?

Yep. That is what we do. :)

We call it Drag Racing around these here parts. ;) But I don't think this car did a LOT of it to be honest.

It is well known in the club as are its previous owners.

The vibration only kicks in about 80mph and then clears after that,it does remind me of a wheel out of balance...Because you can drive though...so to speak.

No I haven't, but its on my list to do. Thanks for your help....
I still have a feeling about those bloody wide alloys...even balanced, they can still be out.

The only other thing that could cause vibration at the speeds you say is the gearbox itself I had this on my car for years and it was only when I put a new box in did the vibration disappear I went through changing gearbox mounts, prop, front and rear UJ's, halfshafts etc damm nearly tore my hair out looking for it, the box was even rebuilt once and the problem returned we think the tail shaft may have been slightly bent. Just a thought as it has lost a prop in the past you may have something bent aswell .

Hi Richard, good to meet you today. This vibration could be anything through the whole rotating parts list unless you can pin point what area it seems to come from. When the prop went the whole transmission was replaced as that went with it, so I would doubt it comes from there. If it is at certain rpm rather than road speed maybe the engine needs rebalancing. 80mph is about 4000rpm so try driving in 1st or 2nd gear for a bit at 4000rpm and see what happens.

Hi Dave like wise it was good to meet you at last (everywhere Ive been with this car people have told me about ur history about the car.)

Thanks for that advise about the vibration, after speaking with a couple of the other charger guys today,I was questioned as to the thirsty diff (petrol use) so I intend to put back in the original for this vehicle and at the same time that will give me good look at all the other moving parts.
Look forward to that calender photo, can you let me know when and where I can buy.
Thanks also to the rest of you guys for your advice on my vib prob. Its a lovely car and I just want it right.
Streets with no names...you should try CSP...some time...
