Thanks Dave but the bottom rear corner is actually too tight a bend....it needs to be more sweeping round towards the bottom of the sill. Ive started fixing it and have got that radius shallower, just need to weld it solid and get the file out to smooth the lip flat. Hope to do that tomorrow evening after work,
Definately mate...Im finding 2 to 2.5 on the wire feed and 3 on power works well for spot welds. I really struggle to get it right outside when trying to do lines of weld in awkward places. Doesnt help that I cant really see what Im doing most of the time. Auto darkening mask is great but even on the lowest setting, when it goes black all I can see is the weld and nothing else. Just doing dot to dot welding at the mo. Dont want to warp the panels. Will practice seams etc on the bench
don't bother trying to do a long weld on sheet as the further you go the hotter it will get and you will just blow through and distort the metal ,do a bit at a time around the plate and eventually you will do the lot
Thats basically what Im doing....Im starting by drilling and spot welding the bottom lip then well spaced spots around the panel and allowing to cool for a few mins before doing a bit more. Wanted to do a nice seam inside the arch lip but it just wasnt hapoening...stick to plan A...its working! Really dont want to buckle anything up. Thanks for the advice big fella
Steve what gas are you using, argon mix or pub gas and where are you getting it from? I have just got hold of a Clarke 150 EN to teach myself with as I have floors wheel arches and a few other bits on the RR to do

I use Hobbyweld 5 argon shield gas Carl...its £60 one off payment for the bottle then about £30 per refil. If you google hobbyweld then go to stockists on the site you will find the nearest stockist to you. They reckon you will get about 2hrs actual weld time out of one fill. Unless, like me, you leave it switched on!!!
Get stuck in mate...big learning curve but achievable.....ive nearly done my drivers quarter and will start on the trunk soon
I was looking at the hobbyweld site today but it didn't say how much a refill was. I will look into that is that for a 10ltr bottle? Pub gas is a lot cheaper but don't think it makes such good welds may splatter a bit.

Nice one Carl....as there is no yearly rental etc..I think hobbyweld are quite good value if you are just working on your own small projects like I am. Big scale would eat them though. It seems to be a problem finding companies that will rent out decent sized bottles to domestic users. My uncle had a look at hobbyweld at the NEC when he visited the car show in Nov and said it was a good deal for the casual user.
Thanks for the suggestion as well Matt....worth knowing all these options. Putting a tiny bit of effort into learning seems to open new doors when it comes to working on our cars. Im looking at stuff I would have run a mile from a while ago and just giving it a go now
I have heard about Adams gas but they are in Kent I believe and if you count the cost of delivery or fuel to collect it probably wouldn't make much difference price wise.

Adams deliver only in East Sussex,Kent and South London. They won't deliver to me now, even though I'm only 2 miles off their East Sussex delivery route. Instead they have an agent who delivers and I understand they now have a national network of stockists. Email them to find out as their website seems to not work properly.
