That means nothing Derek. If you have headers and not the original cast manifolds then the slightest leak in the gasket will cause a noise like that. You will not always see or feel evidence of it.
Bring it to the Nats and don't worry mate.
Remember I drove 250 miles home with one bent pushrod, followed by two bent pushrods, followed by one pushrod falling out and then finally (1 mile from home) the other pushrod falling out.
If I can do 250 miles basically on only 7 cylinders then you can get to the Nats with a slight clack.

Undo the manifolds reseal them, if noise is still there, take rocker covers off, check for anything obvious whilst turning motor over by hand, if still nothing do a comp test. Drain the oil, take the filter off, cut it open, check for metal in there, possibly from bearings etc. If all these things check out ok, put new filter on, change the oil, stick it back together and stop worrying about it.

I undrestand what you are all saying, but why does the noise only start aroun 2500 rpm no matter what gear I am in, have done the oil filter thing and no metal in it, will change back to iron manifolds over the weekend and see what happens, thanks for all the advice guys.

If it was anything serious it would be making noise all the time.

Typical of the increased exhaust pressure and volume Derek, but order a set of Percy's exhaust gaskets first!

i use these but obvioulsy not this shape mines a hemi 6
i have to get an exhaust and an inlet sealed on a none cross flow head usuing the same set of studs with differing flange height on the two inter linked manifolds
its a bleeding nightmare
never had a problem with this kind of gasket
compress down like a slice of toast
thick expended graphite mounted on steel shim
compresses down to a surface like black ice and seals even if the flange is rusty
basic 1900-1940s tech used in factories with steam pipe manifolds to steam powered machines...
now used in nuclear power stations to keep bad stuff in
i.e tested to extreme lengths by chaps with more to loose than us

Derek.
I know this sounds cack, but it may help identify the type of noise.
If your going to take the headers off and change things over run up the motor with nothing connected..headers-mainfold away from the heads....if its a mechanical noise you should still here it if it is just a gasket ( and they all blow mine did) that should tell you otherwise.

charger01 wrote:Derek . I havn't got any sooty marks on mine but I know the drivers side on my car needs a new header gasket. They don't seem to last long. I have bought some copper ones which I will fit after the Nats. I can live with the ticking till then.
For what its worth (jack all

) mine too. I have never managed to seal a set yet. TTI headers, cometic gaskets, tti gasket
coppery gaskets - they all blow a bit. ticktickticktick. Drives me mad - Sounds worse from in the car though.
Having said that, mine can be heard at idle and smooths out as I drive... So probably worse than useless info !

I wouldnt have thought you'd hear anything if you run the engine without ANY manifolds on
