Getting more confused now! I just looked, and it looks like a 904 from the pics and descriptions above (square-ish with a corner missing), but according to Matt Snowball, :
I'm reasonably sure it was a 727 ? I did rebuild the trans using a B&M kit , and it was a 727 to the best of my recollection . I've never worked on a 904 as far as I can recall
Any other way of telling?

If it looks like a 904 it is a 904.

I've always removed that cover to aid cooling the convertor, never had a problem with it picking up rocks and stones.

The Dart might not have done much mileage, but 3 of my other Mopars were daily drivers...

Nice of Dave to strip a 727 and take pics just to help out ;)

Never used the cover on my Dart in 8 years. Made it easier to notice when the pump seal had failed :?

Oh take a leg pull will ya.

I didn't bother with one either until I was driving on a road that had just been "surface dressed" and all the stone chippings (that they they expect YOU to press into the road surface for them with your car tyres) were clattering about under the engine and it got me to thinking that maybe a stone guard over there wouldn't hurt.

It took 10 mins to cut a bit of steel mesh to shape and press it over the original cover to get the right profile. The original bolts held it in place.
