Guy, what axle are you running? I have a good set in my 9" you can borrow if they will fit, I wont be needing them any time soon

when you see the standard axle spline length and the strange axle spline length there is quite a difference.

would that have an impact.

Looking at where the distortion is Dave I'd agree!!
Full spline engagement must be the best

The splines were fully engaged with the spool, it was just that the splined area was longer than required. there was about a 2mm gap between the two shafts to allow for any expansion that might happen.

Anyhow I picked up the new shafts today from Hausers and went to fit them this afternoon. The splines are a lot tighter in the spool than the previous shafts and I really struggled getting the N/S one in (its not going to come out easily at all) when I came across a bit of a problem. I have not fitted the O/S one yet

The flange on the new shafts is 1.5mm larger than that on the old shafts  and the old shafts were very tight when fitting the discs over them. The car is running what I think are Merc discs and Granada scorpio calipers. I do intend to upgrade to a Wilwood set up when funds allow.

Question is do I get the discs opened up on a lathe to fit the shaft or do I turn down the shafts to fit the discs. I need to loose about 1mm off of one or the other

Getting totally Bananarama! off with it at the moment

Open up the disc centres,if you mess with the shaft you may have more problems later with the Willwood stuff fitting a bit slack!

What Laitl said, don't mess with theshafts IMHO.

The centre of the discs were not the issue it was the bell, and unfortunately I have been able to machine the discs as this would have only left the side of the bell 1mm thick which would not have been good if I applied the brakes and the chances were it would have ripped the disc apart  so I have had to have the outer edge of the half-shaft machine ground to give me the clearance inside the bell
Just on my way to pick them up not happy having the new shafts machined but at least I can brake safely...

Right new shafts fitted but still have an issue with the rear calipers moving around, have been out this morning and bought some disc's but have had to drop them off to get some machining done as the centre of the disc is 67mm and the spigott on the drive shaft is 73mm but luckily the pcd is correct. At least I know what the discs are off now 1989 Merc 190..

Heres a short clip of the issue I have been having

I can't work out why the caliper is moving, because the disc appears to be running true..

Is the inner pad rubbing on disc? As disc doesn't look centred in the caliper bracket and when the piston moves back into caliper on brake being released may not be moving away from disc enough if disc not centred.
Are the slide pins worn? Or has the carrier holes for sliders been drilled out oversized? As ford calipers used to seized.....and some people used to either grind slide pins or drill out caliper bracket instead of doing it right
Thou is the axle casing and caliper bracket mounting plate the one that John built?..

Its the one that came from John but I was led to believe it was the same axle that Neil Willet had built by Hauser for the race car he was building this was confirmed by Neil when I spoke to him, it is certainly got some good stuff inside and appears to have been done right.

I have had a dial gauge on the shaft whilst in the housing and there is no issues there. Yes the slider pins are slightly worn and I was going to change them when I put the new disc's on.

The caliper bracket mounting plate might well be the one that John built but I have checked it and it does seem square with the axle.

I'm hoping the fitment of the new disc's and sliders will sort the problem and I will centre the bracket ;)
