I don't like those two spare bolt holes on the heads as the engine twists. It's a pain in the arse when you are working on your todd. Never got an engine in that way with the hood in place without scratching paint somewhere.

Not so bad on a six pack coronet with a lift off hood though I guess.

I just find that the height you need to lift the engine to clear the radiator makes the whole hoist unstable. If the engine swings the whole lot will go over.

At least it has been that way with all the hire hoists I have ever had.

Fair point, Dave, but I own a Big 3 ton hoist with a long reach...(needed it to get over the 'Birds nose....)

Those RB engines are just SO heavy.

I think you would be better off installing something like this in your garage.

i think i'll use your method dave

makes sense when you garage is only 7 foot tall

i'm sue the car stands up on its tippy toes once the engine is lifted a few inches anyway so i'd onkly have a chance by resting it on a wood block againts the K frame with the wheels off

how do you get the car high enough to get it over the K frame and engine

i guess you need to knock out the torsion bars as well

i have a 7 foot high garage at the bottom of what seems like a 45 degree slope.

option is only out the bottom or dig a hole in the roof through into the dining room for the top of the crane

or i could take it out in the street

roll the car into the garage for engine bay prep and paint but then i can't get the car back to the street for a re insertion....

can you expand

Yes torsion bars out as well.

I made a dolly to take the engine and trans from 4x4 (or was it 4x2?) wood and six castors. So it rolls in and out.

Lift the front of the car with straps around the bumper brackets. A long reach on the hoist will allow most of the engine to pull forward enough to let the car down onto axle stands so you can remove the hoist and pull the engine out from under completely.

I found removing the intake and valve covers helped with lift height.

With the car on axle stands first I was able to get the engine and trans far enough under first to get the hoist in position. My hoist had V-shaped legs which meant I couldn't get the legs very far either side of the engine.

I normally put car on axle stands hood off ang the put engine in on its own with a small block of wood under the sump on the steering link bar to stop engine falling back and then I put the gearbox on afterwards.
I install the engine on my own with all the accessories bolted to it so less bending over the car installing all the parts.

I have borrowed a correct lifting plate that incorporates the 2bbl holes so that sould balance the engine better.
