Check you dont have a crush sleeve setting the bearing preload. If you do you will need to put a new chrush sleeve and reset the bearing preload.
When I built mine I used a solid sleeve so i would never have this problem

and under that tin plate cover is the actual seal
if you go levering away with a screw driver don't loose the spring from round the seal lip...it can't fall anywhere becasue its round the pinon shaft...... but remeber its there and it will fall out.
you will need a long bit of tube to bash the new one in with because your pinion is still in place.
tape over the pinion splines
and i'd be hard pushed to see if its a crush sleave from that position
you have metal cap seal then tail bearing before you get to the sleave. take out the tail bearing (easy to say...it fits snug) and i still don't belive you will be easily able to tell.

It is the 489 axle type with the crush sleeve. This one will have shims for the pinion bearing preload.

You'd get the better deal as mines at the half shaft so an easy fix !

Cheers for all the advice guys. One thing I seem to have forgotten to ask is where might one obtain said seal?

I might be inclined to drop a call/email into Hauser racing. they might have some..they do the odd rear end...
and if they don't i'm sure they will have a view on likely candidates who have one here in the UK
