Blue, you have it bang on. Lots of room to play for once, but I'd like a slip, joint just because it's very tight getting the headers in and out even without the slip pipe section. Also, a slip pipe will allow a little maneuvering in the final fit I hope. Just need to find someone to trust the job to

Anyone with a TIG welder should be able to make a nice job of that. See if you still lived in Cheshunt my man would have got that sorted for you by now....

Yes mate, I know. Want any surfboards repairing?

Thinking about it, if you used a piece of angle iron and drilled it using your header gasket as a template you could bolt the header to it as if it was on the head. Then if you take it to someone like that, and say "Instead of this tube going from here to here by this route, I want it to go this way instead" they can't really get it wrong.

Blue, already done it albeit with a piece of wood. I intend to deliver it to said welder with wood template attached. Can always be replaced with a piece of steel at the workshop.
By reusing the existing slip joint in the straight section of the collectors it should go ok.

Have you tried modifying the engine mount for clearance ?

Mick, it's not one of the usual header issues. The headers have a kick out to clear A body torsion bars. The short tube seen exiting at 45 degrees need to be straight and then head up,to the exhaust manifold.
Pics aren't great and don't really show the situation. Given that the headers came at a fair price I can't grumble at having to pay for a bit of extra fabrication.
Can't wait to see how the new heads really start to breathe with the headers over 340 iron manifolds.

Sorry to see they didn't fit straight up Miles!
Be good to see them fitted at the NATS though with the Cornish mod done!
Look forward to hearing if you get any seat of the pants gains when coupled with the new heads!

Dave, don't worry, I was prepared to take a chance. Damn sure it will improve the breathing. Nice to spend money om bits that make it go faster rather than just on necessary repair parts.

Optimism much diminished today.

Will foul as it is where the new pipe would have to rise out of the collectors.
The new shaft hasn't arrived in the post yet, but my measurements tell me that unless I cut and weld the shaft as well, the altered pipe work will not fit.
That pic also shows how different my headers are to the ones In the pic.

If only.. I'm torn between selling these unmolested and forking out even more bucks for a correct part, or finding someone down here I can entrust to put the existing ones right. I'm going to call a local hot rod builder I know and see if he can do it.
I have to say its some testimony to TTI that a pair of heads built for an A body fits so well without drama, just one pipe not shaped for my car.
No need to undo steering.
Simply loosed engine mount bolt on drivers side and jack the car an inch or so and the header slips up from underneath. Passenger side is even easier; take oil filter off and the support bar that goes from block to trans bellhousing and it slots right in.
Runs very tight to torsion bar, but that's it.

Miles mate ill send you pictures of mine I think that do at least 3 laps of the engine bay through steering and torsion bars...make it as you go along
Good luck mate
Rich..

Thanks Rich, it is all doable. Just feels like sacrilege cutting up my TTis
That said, they only fit certain cylinder heads (my Indy ones) so I guess cut n shut will have to happen.
Just out of my comfort zone as I have to entrust the job to someone.
