this is how i did it

not necessarily right might be wrong but worked

cam lifters torco lube only the big spring for the pair on each valve

set it all up for a clean start
charged battery
set idle speed screw to silly fast position
set timing to about 5 degrees retarded from where it should be (easy start won't overheat)
filled carb bowl with fuel

with the air cleaner lids off and the throttle open i pumped about 1/2 can of ether/damp start into the inlet

I painted a white line on every push rod just below the rocker where you can see it.

wraped the head perimiter in an old bed sheet to save the mess

started it with the rocker tins off

check each pushrod is turning and if not switch it off.

when happy they all are

switch off.

put rocker tins on

do full 20 minute break in at 2000+ rpm

if the pushrods are turning, then the lifter is turning. if the lifter is turning you are more or less certain that it won't be destroyed during break in if everything else is good.
Coil bind or retainer/ stem seal bind and you will destroy the lifter/cam but you checked that earlier........ :)

new lifters often fit a bit tighter than old lifters

a well oiled lifter should sink into the bore by gravity over a good few seconds and not get stuck

if they get stuck or need force when you put them in. investigate, if they won't turn, you risk wearing the stuck one away during the break in period.


as i say no expert but took the bits i thought useful from other's experience and did it in a way that i felt was as safe as i could be on me own

do break in outside not in a garage near or under the house. That's the last place you want to have a fire

Yep if any the lifters won't turn carnage is on the cards. I was talking to a mate about the burnishing tool Hughes sell to correctly size the lifter bores, thinking I'll get one for when I build my 408. Also, when using solid lifters I like to use the EDM ones that directly oil the lobe rather than relying on oil splash, has to give the liter the best chance of survival.

I've got a comp cams 209H in my 360, also fits 318

nice idle, still gives vacumn for the brakes. mines on hydraulic lifers

in stock at realsteel
