Does this mean that the rings don't move round the piston like we are led to believe?

Yes compression rings move round, but whats the chances of the top and bottom ring on the oil control ring moving round and lining up with the gaps in line on all 8 pistons. As Dunc says ,definitely fitted incorrectly

Ok, now I've re-read the post I see what you mean. It does look like the oil scraper rings stay put where they are installed.

they do rotate, but i think they were installed as per photo, i only ran the engine for 3 hours. hence they haven't moved. i would think if they are install in line they are less lightly to rotate, as the compression and oil will force its way through the gap. as always lesson learned the hard way maybe i should have totally stripped the engine before it went in.

i painted the backings for the arm rests as the chrome had worn off again i will replace at a later date
Hi there,

Sorry to hijack the thread but do you have details of the guy that does the pattern door cards, although he may not cover my model. My 71 Charger ones are perished beneath the vinyl. At present I am cutting hardboard to replace the factory stuff (the metal upper panel is ok) and stripping all the perished bakelite textured coating from the rear panels/kick pods and sail panels/pillars. I'm getting there but it's taking weeks....!!

Cheers, Rich

well it doesn't smoke any more. ran the engine up today had a slight misfire then a sudden loss of oil pressure on a restart. i didn't put two and two together but after a good few hours, i finally found two bent push rods, the loss of oil pressure was because the hydraulic lifter jump out and the oil just spilled from the gallery. I've posted a want advert for two push rods come on guys i only need two 383 push rods they are 8 1/2 inches long. i hate i only work on my own car i would of found the fault much quick when i worked on the spanners, grrrrrrrrrrr tonight i don't luv mopars. still kicking myself up the arse for missing that i didn't seat the push rods correctly.

It happens to us all Nick. The important thing is you've found the problem & know how to fix it. :thumbright:
