update

if you want to firm feel your Mopar automatic steering box
you can do the following to the pump to adjust the level of assist

it works on all
but is easiest on saginaw pumps because the valve you want to modify or change can be taken out with out dismantlation.

No i can't tell you if you have a saginaw pump i wouldn't know one if it hit me on the head.

the power steering pump outlet has a pressure valve behind it

if you unscrew the pump outlet

there is a 3 part valvy thing sitting on a spring behind it

leave the spring

if you swap out the one that is in there for a slant 6 A body one 64-68

you reduce the line pressure from 1400LB to 800 LB

if you can't find a slant 6 A body saginaw pump

just dismantle the valve you have and make it as per the slant 6 one

mole grips on the un machined bit
socket onto the hex end

inside you find 1 ball bearing 1 spring and 2 shims on a brass 2 part screw together contraption

increasing the shim thickenss
lowers the line pressure

you will have to make your own shims

get washer of the same OD as the shim
and drill its ID out

if you double the thickness of both shims
you reduce the line pressure by half.

i can supply scan of the article I found

works on all saginaw mopar pumps but should only be done on pumps driving ballnut and screw steering boxes.

rack and pinion set up for late model trucks need 1400LB to work

Evening ,
I will have to look under the bonnet ,but have a feeling its the Federal.Maybe.
Its a good fix .I wouldnt mind light steering if I knew which point of the compass I was headed.Saying that box only has minimal play,I think its a bit of everything .A lot to check over.
You say on the output Dave999 but Dave previously said shim input shaft.Sorry to be picky!

Also realized no sway bar fitted ,so new control arms and rubber bushes all round.
Before that I will do brakes and shocks.
CPP do their brake kit for $599 and $210 to ship.Think thats worth a punt.As they use Mopar calipers should be able to get different grade pads?

input shaft bearings on steering box need correct preload that was the subject of the first post

but this is a pump modification to give better feel.

to do it to a federal pump i think you would need to take it to bits and it might not just be shims

Dave999, I would like a copy of the article on the Saginaw pump modification if you still have it.

Thanks
