If i'm not mistaken then Kevs point is do not fire the motor, if it's leaking using a drill there will be nothing in the sump inside a couple of seconds if running at 2200 ish, which is cam break in speed.
There's either something holding the plate from sealing or an obstruction somewhere.
Miles is there no one close by that could cast another pair of eyes on this, as 2 minds are always better than one

When the motors running surely there is less restriction to the oil flow? If hes over priming with everything stopped, would it not over pressurize in pump and filter area?
Are the holes and slots in the filter plate and special bolt absolutey clear, and is that bolt in otherwise realy good condition? apparently it has to be tip top and there is a new type available to address the earlier typs shortcomings.

Had a mate come 'round to give it a go today and produced a seal at 45psi. We stopped then becouse i dont want to over prime with the engine not turning at the same time (CPs point).
I'm moving towards fire up. The leak is not a gush and i wont empty the sump that quickly even at 80psi. i'll also have a spare pair of eyes to tell me to shut down if required.
Fingers crossed....
ps thanks for the input.. anyone of you guys holidaying on Cornwall??

I knew I had seen a recent post on this on Moparts...looked the other day and couldn't find it....looked again today for ages and finally did!!
It may or may not help - two possible causes are the plate has been warped or collapsed, or you are using a later threaded collet which is the wrong length. More likely the former I guess, but sounds like you might be OK now anyway?

Did you drill the extra holes by the way? Worthwhile mod to double the number of holes in the plate

Thanks Gavin, thats a really useful link. It mentions torque setting of 60 ils which is more than I have gone to. I'll check again. The parts I use worked fine on the 318 which I removed from the car so I assume they are not damaged.

Is anyone able to verify the torque setting for the oil filter plate. That figure is mising from the list of spec that I have. Just dont want to whack it up to 60ils unless its meant to

You're doing the right thing! Keep asking questions and keep trying to fix it until you do. It's the kind of thing that is so annoying after all the work you've done and you just want to fire the engine up, but keep pursuing it, you will fix it, and then you can fire the engine!!
