Well what a day hitched up the car on her new well actually different trailer and hauled her down to Camberley and finished the outstanding jobs setting the ride height, wheelie bars and electrics ect.
Timed her up at 36 before and fired her up here is a vid link for you

Testing was stopped after several runs with a broken oil pump drive shaft.
Need to strip down pump check for damage and go again great day. :thumbright:

Had a couple of chats with members about this failure, the bronze gear is fine and the pump is brand new with no scratches on the rotating faces so the question is why did the shaft break?
suggestions so far.
Shaft to long and binding but there is no witness on the bottom of the broken bit.
Pump face to tight how do you measure this?
Cold oil and to much oil pressure is was 95 at idle.
Any body have any experiences of this?

Bob,
Its a regular Mopar Oil pump drive, their about $90 bucks from Summit, in stock, as looked at ordering one this weekend.

When I asked, did it shear at the transition to allen drive, you said No ? So was confused to see the picture.

Like I said, I cant think if I used a longer gear drive or not, long time ago now, just recall the shaft being short for the KB Oil pump I was running ?
Which is why I said, check that shaft & pump are not bottoming out, when tightening the pump.

Easy to check, measure depth in pump & measure how much of shaft protrudes. As yours is broken, you will have to try & measure what you have (Depth mic) plus the broken part.

Your more than welcome to come & check out the bag of oil pump springs I have. I got these,as I had the same problem with too much oil pressure, so reduce the spring pressure in the oil pump.

For your information, I used a belt driven dizzy, so only used the shaft to drive the oil pump & not the dizzy. I modified an old dizzy housing to keep the oil shaft in the downward position to drive the oil pump.

How much pressure/torque was required on the pump, when you used a drill to prime the oil ?

I assume you were running the drill in reverse or no one ran the pump the wrong way when trying to prime ?

Cheers Mark (Yes, I stole Jerry's Password again :D )

HI Markjerry :D
Yes I ran the drill in reverse and it was at 60psi in less than 20 sec nearly burnt me drill out.
It was enough to pump oil out of the spray bar valve which I had not tightened.
I will try to get a new drive shaft tomorrow.
The pump on it now is a high vol Miloden unit.

Bump interestingly you can see splits lengthways where the case hardening is and the softer centre bit like a chocolate egg ;)

Case hardening normally only penetrates 0.010"- 0.0015" so the centre will be soft. Would of thought in this day & age there probably induction hardened. Lot cleaner, more stable, less warpage, no scale slag to clean up.
