Brake Drum Removal

Thanks men....think Im right in the middle of a huge storm in my teacup....I will let everything bed in and if I'm still frying eggs on the drums after the nats I will have another look.

Blue....I completely forgot about the parking brake adjustment until it twigged when I couldnt get it to release properly. I forgot that the shoe linings are thicker on the new ones and the parking brake has a direct effect on shoe movement. I eventually adjusted them as you suggested and now think its just the bedding in thats making them hot.

If i turn up at the Nats with flames bellowing out of the back end you will know Ive Bananarama! it up again!

Which area of the Brake Shoe is contacting the Drum and causing it to heat?

I bet it is the bottom part...........

When I took the drums off again yesterday pete, it was the leading edge of the shoes that looked slightly glazed. Not much but enough to heat the whole drum up....

Often you have to chamfer new Shoes to prevent premature contact.....

I adjusted mine up a bit too tight once after having the axles out for a diff rebuild. They were not new shoes but only about 2000 miles on them.

I drove from Newcastle to Sunderland. Thought I could smell something funny at the toll booth for the Tyne Tunnel.
Got to Sunderland and the drums were glowing red.

They were too hot to adjust and they had seized up solid. I thought the engine performance felt down a bit.

Anyway. I left them to cool. After a few hours I borrowed a jack and had a feel of things. The drums were OK and free again. Wheels rotated without any feel of drag.

So I drove it home. No problems. Checked them again a few days later. They had "adjusted" themselves to fit perfect. No further action needed.

Getting there....Im guilty of expecting everything to work perfectly on my old boat but thankfully you guys with the experience point me on the straight and narrow....sure everything will settle down.
