Post by db »

So panic set in when we started thinking about moving house and i've got this great lump of iron immobile on me garage floor.

A fine excuse to break out the power tools :D

Good old fashioned British inginuity and engineering! Make it into the worlds fastest tot-rod! :P
24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not…

Those of you who know the history of my motor will know it was mated to a manual box, this is the 1st time i've attempted to bolt up to my auto.

The clever ones will know whats coming.....

Panic, thats what

They won't fit!
The trans shaft fouls the end of the crank!
The crank has this tiny roller bearinged hole and the auto has a great fat splined shaft sticking out :(

So having sulked for a suitable time, i rang Dunc. Thanks mate ;) Turns out all you do is pull the bearing and the collar it sits in and voila- the auto fits :D

Not as easy as it sounds, but with a bit of old skool engineering born out of cheapness and desperation....

Right, back to bolting up the trans...

The final result is a system which allows me to move the motor and trans together or separately, safely and easily.
I can work on any part of the motor including removing the sump, i can split engine and trans with no lifting. I can fit headers, (mini)starter and in theory fire it up!!
The whole lot is also at the correct angle as it would be in the car car, i.e. the carb dead level. ish.
Due to the car having elephant ears to mount the motor and no X-member, i could probably lift the front of the car & roll the motor & trans in?
Sorted 8-)

That is the dog's mate! Well done you! (Don't forget the spliney thing on the front of the gearbox goes into a torque covertor (3 clicks, it's home!) that bolts to the flex plate that bolts to the crank ;) )

Hey thanks Pete!
I'll be speaking to young Trev about some ears soon...
I've heard rumours about these Talk Converters. I'm sure i can whittle one up from an old toffee tin and some of the fairies from my garden. Meanwhile, elsewhere on this site, another story of cheapskate engineering is brewing ... and this one involves a farm jack!
