I think you have identified the problem yourself. If the car stands outside or is used in winter with salt on the roads at all you get this problem.

Or it could be down to the fluid being old and having a high water content.

Yep, I'll bet that's it - I've had it happen on a number of infrequently used cars.

Got mine from W.A.S.P,any ampar dealer should get them,mine were in stock.

Sounds like a later lightweight alloy master. Rear/larger reservoir serves front end. Check your rear flexi,might as well change the set while you're there. You'll know their age and you can change the brake fluid.

I found a firmer pedal when I changed all 3 flexi`s to braided SS.
Less give/flex in the pipe I guess but it was noticeable..
