Post by Anonymous »

Where do bears crap in the woods?

Who is stripping the car?
whats the body work like underneath?

etc. etc. etc.

You ask a tricky question, to which an answer is difficult.

My guess, £5k at the very least (allowing for someone else to strip car, and do some moderate panel work.

i think they crap behind the trees, otherwise we might see them

anyway bodywork is fine just needs to be cleaned of old paint i guess and sanded.
Just wanted an idea of costs (however rough) if its around 2k or 5k or anything else so i can start saving!

cheers

The cost is mainly down to labour, depends on how far you plan to go, i.e trim removal, do you want it bare metaled? Or is it a flat of what you already have and a quick blow-over.Also bear in mind there is more work involved in a complete change of colour. If you blow over your old coat you may get a reaction between new & old.Speak to Ivor he is an "Expert"

Ivor the so-called "expert" is off down the pub!

But Clivey's right, when you start stripping, the old paint, that's when the truth comes out and the real cost can be assessed.

I very much doubt you'd get anything decent for less than 2 grand and that's assuming there's very little repair work to do. Most places won't want to do it anyway as they can make more money for less hassle doing accident repairs on modern cars. Be very careful where you take it, it's very easy to get ripped off for lots of money. Don't ever leave your car somewhere to be painted unless you have seen several examples of their work and spoken to the owners as well. Go for reputation over price every time!

Anyone heard about 2 Pack paint being stopped from Jan '07. I heard only water based paints (base Coat) But laquer/Hardener can still be used ! Not heard about 2 Pack etch primer, which is probally the most dangerous of the lot

Right...you are reading a post from a man barely alive, you don't want many Christmas bashes like the one I had last night if you want to live long, that's for sure...even Richard Maltman would have struggled...

Anyway, just to add to what's been said, yes, solvent base materials are being phased out in January in favour of low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials...basically, this means waterborne basecoats and low voc primers and clears, it's no great shakes really, I'm pretty sure that John Castleman at JPC has been using compliant materials for years, but there are exceptions to the rule, which means car restorers and motorcycle refinishers can still use solvent based materials.

I agree wholeheartedly with Blue, that you should always go by reputation, not by price and don't hand your car over unless you get some idea of a schedule of work and a professional refinishing company won't do that until the paint has been stripped and the real extent of the work is assessed.

Cheap resprays at £1000-£1500 are pretty widely available, but they are exactly that, cheap resprays and they can be perfectly acceptable just to smarten the old girl up, but that's about it...good quality paint jobs ain't cheap, that's about the size of it!
