Challenger 4 speed conversion

Post by Anonymous »

I'm considering converting my SB 3 speed challenger to 4 speed and was wondering how much of a job it would be. Do I need a different clutch and bell housing or will I just need a box? Are there any differences between BB and SB boxes? As there is one from a Roadrunner on eBay ending tomorrow.

Cheers Mike, Might take you up on that. I looked for those bits you were after, definitely got them all if you still need them.

LOTS of work - pedal box, Z bar, you would need an E body box, SB bell housing is fifferent as is the clutch, 18 spline, 23 spline..it goes on and on....................

It IS a lot of work and parts hunting. Duncan (Cannonball) could give you the low down on parts. I should have been more clear that some boxes (I think) have dual mounting points for the shifter location but an A body will not line up from memory so you need to research it carefully.

Blue converted my A body from auto to 4 speed. I converted it back  . It was a good drive spoiled and not up for track duty unless you have a ready suppply of parts.

I have had 5 (at least ) 4 speeds and will never have another.
Here starteth the great debate yet again.

It is personal preference but it is a lot of work and expense to convert.

I suggest you drive one before making a decision if you have not already done so

To be honest If its a lot of work I won't even consider doing the conversion. I just saw the box on ebay and thought it would be nice to have a 4 speed instead of my 3 speed, purely so the gears were all in the regular places (1st forward). I know I'm going to reverse into someone at the lights sooner or later.

Pete, I think (but stand to be corrected) that Dan's car is 3 speed MANUAL not auto, so much less work possibly ?

that trans no use for a e body car because off the shifter placement and the 3 speed ext you have wont go accross to the 4 speed

Interesting points made there on the 4 speed ownership thing there Pete. I have always had a bit of a love affair with em and go weak at the knees when I see a pistol grip shifter. But, I have yet to meet anyone with one, who actually likes it (from a "living with it" point of view).

I am glad I never went down the 4-speed conversion with my car really. :?
