power steering pump compatibility Q

Post by Anonymous »

Hi guys.

My Motor is a '69 H.P job and I have the Ferderal style pump leaking away at the moment. I have found some on eBag (federal) but they are listed as fitting 426 Hemi as well as others (68-69 GTX, blah blah blah)

Anyway, it looks like mine, will it fit okay?

Okay guys I have my nice new pump fitted and all looking great but I have one question - the return hose (well I assume its a return :help: ) pipe is situated sort of towards the bottom of the resovior on my old pump and was small (sorry no exact sizes  )

With the new pump this hose fitting is pretty much next to the filler neck and is a lot bigger and pointing upwards :?

The question is why is it in a different place to my old one? Do I have to use my old resovior ( :P )

Okay well, despite the lack of response( ) I went ahead and fitted it anyway and it works. Looks gastly with the larger pipe but at least it works for now. Now to find some explanation for the different pipe :read2:

Steve , you might of had the wrong size on it originally , almost all the pas pumps have a bigger return line , it comes off the top rear of the pump facing upwards , then "U" bends down to the box with a clip.

Return is larger cos it's under no pressure , but has to circulate the fluid back to the pump which is under pressure to the pas box , if it were the same size you would have resriction issues.

Never understood why fuel return lines are'nt plumbed in the same manor. :?

Thanks Adam this is good news. I havent managed to find any pictures/info showing the pumps with bigger return which was confusing but hey ho.

So what happens on the steering box end as this still has a fitting for the 'old' small hose?? I've had to bodge it by building it up with progressively bigger hose just as a temporary measure..but it's vomit-inducingly ugly :?

Might sound like I'm not being very intuitive but I just wanna get straight about what sould be what before I dive in there 8-)

So the physical differences are a smaller resovior and smaller pulley but for what my needs are I am thinking I'll be fine. On the site I got the pics from it seemed that the type I have is for up to '66 and mine being '67 is different.

The bigger the pulley , the slower it will rotate.

Got me @ it , edited it 4 times. :D
