I know nothing about these things

other than it should have a kickdown linkage from the carb to the box

and it will knackerit eventually if you don't

bits wear out and bad things happen

someone will have an original one
and lokar will do a universal infinitly adjustable kit (well they do for everything else)

Get a kickdown and give a good kicking to the idiot that removed it.

yea i wanna get it sorted, its had an edlebroke carb put on it which looks rather new so i suppose they just couldnt be bothered to finish the lil bit off.
how do them universal things fit then

(would having a kick down make it rev a bit more then???)

Neil(will) on here has the Lokar kickdown cables and they are easy to fit ,and work a treat. If you floor it ,it will rev higher in each gear before changing.I bought mine @ the Nats a couple of years ago.
Look for him in the traders section and make sure he takes you one..

Just so you know what the kickdown lever is for.

It actually has a funny name for what it does because it is actually a throttle valve. It varies the hydraulic line pressure according to throttle position. Therefore combined with road speed it also senses engine load.

This is how it knows to shift down when you are going up a hill or overtaking.

Without it you are running on whatever the line pressure is. So you could have harsh shifts at low speed or soft shifts under load.

Also it opposes pressure from the governor during shifts. That allows the car to remain in a gear longer before shifting up. Or forcing an automatic downshift.

When you adjust the kickdown lever or cable. Make sure that the lever on the trans gets pushed (or pulled) all the way back when the carb is fully open.
That way you will get the highest rpms at full throttle in drive when you floor it.

But not necessarily the best thing for quick Quarters! Adjust the kickdown back out 'til you start going slower. 2 twist back and you de man!

Aha! :thumbright: My 'box is Semi Auto as it has a manual valve body (reverse pattern). I LOVE it! S'like a TipTronic. All the fun of manual but no clutch! Click it into 1st gear! Mash the throttle! 6000rpm! Blam! Into 2! 6000rpm! Blam! Into 3! 6000rpm! (PRN123 ;) ) You be doing 110; on yer own! That Evo/Impreza/Skline/Ferrari/Jag/Aston etc can be seen in the rearview! ;)

If you are going up a steep hill in drive it saves you the bother.

If the line pressure is not regulated by throttle position then the pressure levels are all over the place and the trans cannot work right.

if you want to go manual sift get a manual valve body.

Oh cool.

No, I'm careful with rpm's and tend not to go crazy anyway so I think I'm okay. I just thought for a minute It was a big NO NO to do this.

It is a big no no. The pressure in your box will vary anywhere between 0 and 100psi. It will not be long before it needs a rebuild.
