Bore ridge remover.

Post by Trigger_Andy »

Now that I have the 340 at home. (Cheers Dave :thumbright: ) I want to start striping it down so I can access the damage to the bores. Reading through my Hanes and Chilton manuals they both state I need to use a ridge remover on all the bores. Where do I get this tool from? I've loooked at a few tool web sites with no luck.

Oh, and any tip's for a bottom half tear down would be much appreciated :thumbright:

On the bottom end bit, make sure when you take the rods n pistons out, you label them to say which bores they come out of, and which way they went in. :thumbright:

label everything and keep it in order! If you know where it came from and how it came out then putting it back together is much easier.

Ridge Reamer you can get from Machine Mart for about £15.

Cheers guys.
James, I had a look in Machine Mart the otherday when I was picking up the Engine Stand, could not see a reamer or find one in the the Catalouge? Any other places I may find one? I seen one for £50 but I was hoping to find a cheaper one than that.

Hi Trigger,

Unless there is a serious amount of wear in the bore you won't need a Ridge reamer to disassmble.
If there is more than 8 thousanths of wear in the bore you are looking at a rebore and new pistons anyway.
The ridge reamer is a crude tool and if the blade catches the worn section of the bore just below the wear line, you have got an even bigger problem than before.

So just be very careful when pushing the pistons past the ridge and you will be fine.

Cheers Baccy,
I'll need to buy something to measure the bores to see how worn they are. What do I buy and where do I get them? I've got a set of Vernier's but would I be better of with a set of micrometers?

Bore measure

Hi Trigger,

As you are having machine work done to the block, I would not go to the expense of buying measuring equipment. Better to loan a bore guage or an internal micrometer if you need to satisfy your curiosity.
