Spool is basically a big hunk o' metal that replaces the spider gears and/or lsd in the diff, so basically your rear end is welded up. No good for corners and general street duties, but great on a 323 Beemer if yer into drifting.... Posi, Locker, LSD, Suregrip are all sorts of limited slip differential which puts the power down to both wheels when nailed, but allow the differential to work un-loaded on corners, thus saving wear and tear to the whole axle/tyres etc. HTH!

Spool is cheap as there are no moving parts. I run a clutch type SureGrip in a 742 pumpkin with 4.10 gears.

and im on a tight budget so think its gunna be a spool, so will it only be a pig round bend when on the throttle or all the time???

You do NOT need a Dana with a small block - 80lbs heavier than an 8 3/4.
Ditto you do not need a spool on a real street car. Having said that I am going Spool but the car will be over 670bhp; a bit of a handfull on the street

I'm with Pete, a Dana for a small block car (unless it was VERY special!) would be overkill...even Kev hasn't managed to break his yet, and heaven knows he's tried!

You cannot turn corners with a spool if on the throttle or not. The only way to turn is to drag one wheel which will tear the hell out of it.
Geof Hauser will build you a strong one. You might have to supply a core though. Best asking him.

Your best bet is a Ford 9inch if you want a locker, you can stick a Detroit in it.

You dont have to have a ford 9" to have a locker Sandy I have a Detroit locker in my 8 3/4
