Mumberson's Transport Yard

Post by GeneralWee »

Anyone know whats's happening with Ian Mumberson's yard in South Birmingham. I believe he has passed away a few months ago,and they are clearing the yard to sell it. I have had the guided tour from Ian on a few occasions when he was with us, and there used to be tons of spares.
Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

Very sad - he was a character. Talked to him more about his cat, Tac Tac (think that was short for Attack, Attack!!) than cars and parts.
Maybe someone could tell whoever is clearing the yard about M.M.A. and may be list some parts. The sheds used to be full of new engines, stacks of manifolds etc. I bought a brand new Holley off him, and he said he had 600 more - brand new!!
I even remember seeing his yard being described as a "scrap yard" on one of those house buying programs on TV, when they were trying to sell the house next door to him.If only they knew what Ian had in there.
Our thoughts are with his friends and family.

A guy I used to work with went down to Ians yard for a side glass for his Dodge pick up.Ian sorted him one out,the geezer said "yep, thats the right one,how much? Ian said £50 for the glass, the guy replies, that aint worth £50,and with that Ian picked up the nearest heavy object and dropped it on the glass and said"it aint worth Bananarama! now,,get out of my yard. The kid appologised and said he would pay £50 if he sorted him another one out.All Ian would say was get out of my yard.
He never had his glass off Mumbo..(never dared to call him that to his face either, cause I knew what would happen!!!!)GET OUT OF MY YARD.
I knew a long time ago that he had left us.The yards still going of a fashion but will never be the same.He knew everything that was in that place.
Computers/stock control??all in his head.

I have an odd photo or two of the yard some years ago, I will try and post them soon .Taken out of the side of my daimler with 2 Dodge pickup wings poking in my ear! (big ear). The Mrs had to sit in the back all the way back home to Manchester. Not a good parts collector the Daimler, especially with an LPG tank filling the boot.I think Ian was driving a chevy caprice police car on LPG at the time with light bar etc ...cool!!!
Phone conversations used to go...Who are you?...Tim!....Dim Tim?....probably!.....what do you do?.........errr,errrr, errrr Mr.Mumberson, have you got...............
Classic.

Couldn't find the pictures I have of Ian's yard, but if anyone wants to put these co-ordinates into Google Earth, then you will see just how insignificant all our car collections are compared to his!!

Although I'm sure he knew where everything was in the yard, he did have a computer. Don't know what he did with it, but it always looked like it was hooked up to the U.S. Airforce or N.A.S.A or something!!
Just loads of numbers on the screen!!
Untill I saw the overhead shot of his yard, I didn't realise I'd only been round half of it.
First thing you saw in the yard was an American army coach, like a US school bus with a Chevy Blazer on the top of it, and the biggest fork lift I've seen.
