No turn signals

Post by Anonymous »

Hi Guys

Hope someone can help.

Have just got my Coronet back from a prolonged period of repair, only to find that the turn signals have packed up. I had an intermittent problem with them before, when they would not work until the car had warmed up and dried out inside. This time they have packed up completely. The switch, wiring and bulbs are all o.k., so I think the relay may be stuck open due to corrosion(?) Any ideas?

Also fuel tank sender unit: This has also packed up (constantly reading empty), and testing has identified that something is wrong the sender unit in the tank. Is this a difficult job to do, as the workshop manual refers to a special tool (have not checked if this means 'spanner' 'socket' etc!).

Finally, is there anyone in the Sussex / Surrey / Kent borders who is willing / able to look after the car and sort out any problems? I am losing faith in the 'specialist' American garages.

I believe you have the same sender and seal setup I do ('68 C body sender seal is same part number as B body...) Its a big flanged ring which holds a steel plate in place against a rubber ring seal. You need to gently tap the steel ring round until it pops loose and then you get a face full of fuel. As I recall the sender assembly just retracts from the tank. The fuel line flexis go through the same place so it really is gas everywhere.

My manual suggests using a plastic or brass headed hammer/drift to avoid sparks.

'bout the only special tool you need.

Assuming its same as C body, as its the same part number seal.

On the turn signals I'd suspect its a bulb holder or earth fault on the outside of the vehicle if it does it when damp and clears up when dried out. But electrics are not my strong point.

Alister is correct, the fuel sender is held in by a lock ring, pull the wire, pulee the pipe (drain the tank or run it really low on fuel first ) get a metal chisel and gently tap the ring round, they do not sieze so it does not need assaulting! pull the sender out, it will come real close to the diff but it will clear, remove the float which I guarantee has split and stick a new one in.

Floats from Land Rovers fit and are palstic but you have to buy a complete sender  they are around ?30 ! or I have new ones in brass as per original for ?15 ea.

Re fit in reverse order, make sure you clean the seal well first and check if there is an earth strap, some have a strap that clips over the sender outlet jumps the rubber joint and clips onto the metal fuel pipe, re fill the tank and check for leaks.

If you want to check it is this before you do the job, get someone in the car, pull the wire off the sender, switch the ignition on and ground the wire, get the person in the car to tell you if the guage rises CAUTION do not let the guage peg over full as the are not designed to handlea direct ground and will burn out, if the guage heads towards half way it is fine.

Flashers: the car should have hazards, try these and see if they work first, if they do it is the flasher relay that has gone down, if not it may be a bit more involved but for the cost try a new one anyway, any 2 pin relay that can handle 2 bulbs or more is fine, look on the new relay and it should say 21+21+5, or 21x2+5 this will do the trick.

The flasher relay is under the dash near the ashtray, the hazard relay is under the dash clipped to the column braces.

My turn signals used to take a few miles to start working and that was just poor connections. Eventually (after a long winter with the car standing) they stopped working completely and then I HAD to do something about it!

I am in East grinstead, and i kick ass at electrics, i have full workshop felicities (apart from a ramp) and a kettle, so pop round.

dirty hazzard switch can stop the indicator working as they pass through this switch.

i have flasher relays here (nice ones)

both my cars had duff floats , i used an avenger one on one car (bought whole sender off ebay uk for ?5) and some kind of round volvo one on the other car.

i made a quick tool for undoing lock ring, i used a 4 inch long piece of exhaist tube which i cut slots into the end of with a hacksaw. pain in the ass job becuase diff is right in the way so u cant see what you'r doing and you will knock mud in your face. !
