Really silly temperature gauge question

Post by Ivor »

I know this sounds bonkers, but I've got the whole engine bay done, nearly finished the wiring and I'm trying to find my temepretaure gauge sender.

I have a blanking plug in the water pump (383 B body) next to the thermostat housing...is that it?

An accurate location would be really helpful! :?
The pump don’t work coz the vandals took the handles.

Usually it's located on the front of the housing next to the pump itself, right under the alternator bracket mate!

Yes , usualy it points forward but i have a picture of one going verticaly into the pump , my 440 has the hole at the front plugged but the vertical hole is open , im using a capilary type gauge so it will only fir in one of the vertical holes.

Normally you have two holes on the top for the heater hoses and one facing forward for the temp sender.

If you don't use a heater and want to use an electric fan you can use one of the holes for a thermostat switch for the fan. Much better than a thing pushed into the radiator core or clamped in the top hose.
"Painless" is the make on the one I use I think?

Ivor, are you missing the spacer(s) that go inside the Alternator Casing on the main bolt to the Head ?

Thanks Blue!
...and Pete, you may be right, I machined up some spacers for the back of the alternator bolt nearest the head, as there was a piece of squashed copper heating pipe there, I wondered whether or not there should be another between the alternator brackets...better get busy on the lathe again

All machined up and a nice tight fit Dave...only problem is that everything was in and virtually ready to fire up yesterday when through my own stupid fault I snapped the temperature gauge sender clean off in the pump.

So out with the rad, the hoses, the alternator and I'm carefully drilling out the remains of the sender... :(
