Shot blasting

Post by Anonymous »

Are there any good shot blasters in the coventry area?

I have just been to one place and they were very matter of fact about the posibility of getting sand into the casing and therefore wrecking the axle. So matter of fact I was less than impressed and will not use them.

Any good ones?

This is just to clean an axle case?

I just use paint stripper and a wire brush for that sort of thing as long as the metal is not too rusty. A little surface rust comes off easily with a sanding disc.
Same for K-frames and the like. I do get suspension parts like the UCA and LCA sand blasted.

Of course you will have stripped the casing bare and removed all the studs anyway so what matter if some sand gets in the axle case if you get it blasted? You would wash the casing out well after wouldn't you?

But to be honest I wouldn't use any blast media on anything that will house moving parts. There is always a small chance of a bit being left in to cause mischief.

Do as Dave sez, use some elbow grease. (Lazy students, I don't know! :D) Then slap on the old Hammerite Smooth. Is this casing A-Body width?

Ok I'll do that, how do I get into the corners around the suspension mounts? There is rust in all the areas I can't get to!

It's the Vauxhall axle and the worst corrosion is inside the box bits that the suspension mounts to, any ideas on rust removal would be appreciated.

Ha ha ha! :D I thought we were talking about an 8.75" MOPAR housing, what with this being a MOPAR board :D I see your problem now as it is fully built. If a shotblaster had taken it on, I would have been more worried than if he'd had reservations! There is NO WAY you'd keep all the shot out. Just wire brush/ flap wheel/ jenolite it THEN slap the Hammerite on it. It's not as if it's gonna be in the Nats Show 'N' Shine.....

I'm working up to the 8 3/4 Kev, don't run before I can walk and all.

I chose not even to crawl, and gave it to an axle and transmission place in Cov to see if they could work out where the noise is coming from. The result; they can't find anything wrong with the axle at all, they think all the bearings are fine and the wear pattern is just right. I really should learn to trust my own judgement!

They think the noise might be coming from the rear bearing in the gearbox. Does that sound likely? (not having much experience with transmissions etc).

Either way it doesn't matter since the box and motor are coming out in favour of a 2.3 and overdrive trans anyway :thumbright:

Dave Mac told me he doesn't do axles and gave me the number of another guy who does. Dean Knows him apparently, he does jeep gearboxes.

It was the same guy that pointed me in the direction of a shot blasters near Gallager retail park, I wasn't impressed by their attitude though.

Jeeze. Not exactly a Hemi e-body is it?
Just get the wire brush and some detergent on it then slap some hamerite smooth on it just as Kev says. It would take you an hour.

Ooh, that sounds good, I'll check that out. Cheers for the rod ends by the way. And I happened to notice a sneaky four door down the side when I walked by, glad it went to a good home (I wanted to buy it before... Re, insurance farce!!!).
