Whilst trying to get the fuel guage working and following wires everywhere, i found this.

Turns out its the VIN number, as verified by the stamped in VIN on the drivers side front inner wing.

This may be useful for anyone having trouble as they have no VIN tag (Aussiepete?).
Shame its not a build sheet but I was still quite pleased.
Fual gauge still doesnt work though.

I take it that that is on he underside of the dash panel, i noticed that on mine when i removed it (it`s a bit of a pig to remove )

Yes, underside of the dash on the pass side, my dash has never been out so it ties in with the VIN perfectly.

vin number one side and options the other

often all that is left is the scrapes in the paint where the chalk was

mine has E37 in chalk under there.....not an E37 though
