Changing a dizzy - going electronic - 318 in 70 dart- advice

Post by Dart Vader »

318 in 70 Dart

following my breakdown last week I'm going to fix the car this week

1, Any tips on taking a dizzy out, thought they can be little buggers to get out?

2, If changing from points dizzy to electronic one are there any changes to the wiring to do?

Cheers

Err. You remove a bolt and lift it.

And yes. The wiring is a little different.

I put a pertronix in mine, easy to fit and only one wire to cut into, easy and cheap.

Have you bought the full kit? dizzy, orange box, ballast and a bit of wiring with a plug on. If you have, the instructions are in the box. :D

I know you un-bolt it :) .......just had heard they can still stick a bit

I've just got a spare used leccy dizzy from duncan last year so just gunna throw that in

Love to have the orange box combo but funds not allowing yet, however did find a flamethrower coil whilst rooting around.

Just wondered what the wiring was going to do more than anything, don't want to cut cables etc

what happens if you get it the wrong way round?

and will put a nice flame out off your carb ;) :D
the easy bit is swappimg the dizzy, take the cap off locate rotor position and vac can position and fit the replacement in THE SAME, then ask someone on here how to wire it and yes you need the leccy box and the ballast

Just gunna drop in some spare points then for the time being.

Must go leccy though sooner or later

Don't like the idea of losing my hair, if it doesn't gert burnt off I'll probably pull it out due to stressing that I can't get the car to work !!

can help you convert a non electronic car to electronic without much expense

its easy as well

you need 1 leccy dissy

2 piggy back lucar style spades

1 loop of wire

4 standard spades

pair of plyers

1 4 pin HEI module out of a chevy

12 volt coil any v6 bimmer jobby will do

job done

basically

1) wind engine round to TDC
2) pop off dissy cap check where rotor points. if its not at no. 1 wind round to TDC again. it will be then i promise
3) Mark dissy edge with chissel at end of rotor
4) transfer mark to new dissy
5) duck tape new dissy rotor into that position
5) put in new dissy in approx same place
6) transfer all leads to new cap
new dissy is in

however

thats only half of it

get 4 pin HEI module
bolt to bit of angle iron
hose clamp it to dissy

wire it up as per diagram

then

go to ballast resistor and put loops of wire across it
2 pin ballast join pins
4 pin pin ballast join top 2 together and bottom 2 together

then put in 12 volt coil blaster flame thrower or whatever you like as long as its a 12 volt one

job done

if it won't start then the dissy wires are back to front or your module is knackerd

does everything an ornage box does for a lot less money

Oh yeah

need to reset ya timing

well the diagram is.....

i am less artisitc than the bloke that drew that and its always easier to nick something

the idea on the other hand has some merit

standard or orange box and HEI module are designed to do the same thing. Mopar box was invented when it was all seperate components.
the HEI used a new fangled Motorola chip licenced to Delco
one is 1972 tech. and one is 1976. tech so there is not much in it in car terms but in semiconductor terms its a 486DX66 to a pentium 2

i guess they both now use a chinese copy of the obsolete motorola chip as it has been ripped off by all including Bosch siemens Napa wells nordoff

the HEI module is water and oil proof and is potted in hard plastic
its a bit more robust than the mopar unit. i.e never bulges or oozes out tar

the HEI module can run a modern laiminated frame coil which in theory can allow a higher current to flow. something that i belive the FBO version of the mopar box can do but not any others of standard is configuration

higher current into coil in the same time slice = more energy especially if the coil has more windings crammed into it
i.e higher voltage and higher current = all round better

so its a step up from a standard mopar box
seems to be a step up from an orange box if you use it with a good 12 volt high power coil and the module you use has surpassed the 2-3 amp limit of the standard all branded repalcements manage that these days

to come anyhwere near the FBO you would need to get a petronix or Accel module and a matched coil....i'd go with the FBO it would probably work out the same and you get the benfit of recurve of you dissy if you go the whole hog

but for a street car its just fine and dandy provided your dissy still provides the kind of advance curve you want.

modern modules are good to about 6000 rpm the orginal was not

Chrome ornage and standard claim to be good to differening RPMs but you see them getting a right slagging for poor operation out side of normal RPM ranges i.e low energy and missfires abover 5500....i guess that prompted FBO to do the work they have done.

i had the dissy and the coil i spent approx $36USD £17 on a module and pennies on connectors

it works well and has done for 4 years
