Seat Cordoba problem

So, Julie calls me this morning and tells me that the clutch has gone on her 1999 Cordoba.

I think "easy job, cable has broken". Get home and upon checking find that the clutch cable mounting point on the pedal box has fractured and parted company. Great.

In practical terms, I could weld the section back on, but......

It looks like the entire car is built around the pedal box. Horrible job, and what's more it would seem that the steering column has to come out. I have never worked on a car with an Air Bag before and am very concerned in case either I set it off, or importantly prevent it functioning in the event of an accident.

I would really appreciate some sensible advice on how to tackle this job as it is Julies daily driver. This has wee'd on my french fries as I need to get the Dart ready for the HRD's and as ever am running out of time.

Easy To Sort That one Mate

1, Deceide your Not Doing the job.

2, Take to local decent and trusted garage and tell them to crack on with it.

3, Collect fixed Car, bite the bullit and pay the bill.

Problem Solved in three easy steps, i do it all the time

Can you not get at it with a tig?

Nasty job getting that pedal assembly out. Disconnect the battery before disconcerting the air bag.

Hi Al. No, the bracket is complex and failed in 4 places, very high up under the dash just below the screen - gotta come out. Thanks for the disconnect tip.

Disconnect battery and wait a few minutes to let the capacitor on the airbag system to discharge before starting removal,I think it's tied in with the horn and slipring too. You might end up with srs light on when re fitted,which will need a code reset.

Id look for a relay also, cover all bases

I think ray right, but if you do it yourself you've got the airbag advise, now luck forward to getting the steering column out & pray there are no shear off surcurity bolts in your way.........

Reading up on the job, Ray may be right. You need to change the column shear bolts and the plates in the shaft to get the column out and bavk in - 2 special tools to remove the pedals, blah, blah....

Pete, a work colleague had exactly the same thing on her 2001 Polo. She took it to the local VW dealer who quoted £600 to fix it, but a quick Google revealed that it is a known problem on VW's, and that it was subject to a safety recall in the US (because the brake pedal is also affected). She went back with with web printouts, argued a bit, and got them to do it for free! I assume the Cordoba has a similar pedal box.

I know you thought i was taking the pee and sure the i was havin a laugh but i tell ya mate, i do take all my trade stuff to the mechanics, every man to his trade and all that, sometimes its just worth parting with a few quid to save yourself the mither
